Feb. 13, 1904, aged 74 years, 8 months and 15 days. He was one of
8 children born to Samuel and Mary Boyd Caldwell. Two brothers
and 3 sisters are yet living. He grew to manhood in the vicinity

California where he spent 8 years amid the scenes and vocation incident
to that country at that time and coming to LaGrange in 1860. He

a faithful member of the class at Robbins Corners until the class was

40 years he has been a great sufferer from rheumatism and other
complicated diseases. Being possessed of a strong constitution
and a cheerful mind he bore his trouble with much patience. With
him life's fitful dream in ended, his sleep is undisturbed. The

Caldwell, John H. -
departed this life after years of untold suffering at his home in the
Everett District, July 4, 1896, aged 28 years, 1 month and 22
days. The deceased had been afflicted with rheumatism for several
years but was able to do ordinary work until two years ago the 4th of
July, 1894. He became so ill that to labor was impossible.
From that time he had been a constant sufferer and for the last two
weeks death would have been a welcome messenger to end his
suffering. He was born in Clay twp., May 12, 1868 and was married
to Miss Anna Poynter in the Spring of 1887. He taught school
several years until his health failed. He was a member of the M.
P. Church at Pleasant Ridge and the very large congregation that
attended the funeral services gave proof that he was respected as a
neighbor and citizen by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and 2
children who have the sympathy of the community. His wife, noble,
little woman that she is, through all these years of sickness, never
faltered in her effort to alleviate his pain, comfort him in his
suffering and look after the wants of their little children, who had to
look to mother for much of their support. May heaven deal gently
with Anna and her fatherless boys. The funeral services were
conducted by Re. Keasey and Bradley at Bethel, on last Sunday, and his
remains laid to rest in the Bethel Cemetery. - "The Standard,"

March of 1973
Caldwell (Colwell) , Samuel S. - was
born on Oct. 2, 1863 in Clay twp., LaGrange County, Indiana, the son of
Boyd and Elizabeth Snyder Caldwell, pioneers in northeastern
Indiana. His death occurred on Tuesday morning of this week at
the Arthur Keasey home in Howe coming without warning. Mr.
Caldwell was married on Oct. 15, 1885 to Samantha A. Camp, also of this
county. They lived in this county on a farm west of LaGrange
until 1911, then going to Texas where they had lived since that
time. Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell drove back to this county about
3 weeks ago to pass a few weeks with their two children here and to
call upon other relatives and friends. Strange are the ways of
Him who doeth all things well, and her it was, amidst the scenes of his
childhood, in the county of his nativity, far from the place he had
called his home for nearly a score of years, among those whom he had
known all of his life, that death came to this friend of ours.
Fitting it is too, that here he should sleep the silent years away out
yonder where his dust will mingle with the dust of kin and friend,
where the song of the birds and the requiem of the trees fall sweetly
upon the ears of those who mourn, but who do not forget that all is
well with those who are in keeping of a loving God. Mr. Caldwell
leaves his widow, 4 daughters, Mrs. Rollin E. Carney of LaGrange, Mrs.
Howard Ramsby of Wolcottville, this county, and Mrs. R. L. Smith
and Mrs. Elizabeth Crum of Sebastian, Texas; 17 grandchildren and many
other relatives and innumerable friends in the communities where he
lived so worthily and so well. Death, so unexpected and so
sudden, comes as a shock, but it is merciful. Samuel Caldwell was
a man of rugged integrity, honorable, just, loving and kind.
These are the attributes that made him friends and these are the
attributes that held his friendships through the long years of his
active and useful life. His work is finished. His column is
broken, and he sleeps. But those of us who knew him have lost
touch with one who was dependable in time of need, who stood by
us in shadow as well as in the sunshine, and who was steadfast and true
always, unfaltering, tireless, faithful. Mr. Caldwell was a
member of the Pythian lodge in LaGrange and his religious faith found
generous expression through his relations with the Bible Student's
Group. - Source: "The LaGrange Standard," LaGrange,

Obituary
Carnahan, Alexander
- #1 LAGRANGE, INDIANA, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 27,
1913 ALEXANDER
CARNAHAN KILLED BY AUTOMOBILE" - Clay Township Pioneer Meets Death This
- Friday - Afternoon, Near Howe- Was Driving A New Ford Car, His Own,
Home From Sturgis-Machine Ran Into Ditch Alexander Carnahan of Clay
township was accidentally killed this Friday afternoon, on the Vistula
road, west of Howe, not far from where the Foremans live. Mr. Carnahan
was driving home from Sturgis in a new Ford automobile, accompanied by
a young man named Long. In turning the corner on the west Sturgis road,
going west on the Vistual road and running about thirty miles an hour,
according to the Long boy, Mr. Carnahan lost control of his machine and
the automobile slid into the ditch made by a fill-in. Dr. Stewart H.
Shrock, deputy coroner, who held an inquest shortly after the accident
occurred, is of opinion that the death of Mr. Carnahan was caused by
shock. No bruise or contusion could be found upon the body, nor was the
body crushed or any bone broken. Mr. Long, who was in the car
with Mr. Carnahan, was not injured, being thrown clear of the machine.
He righted the automobile and called to Mr. Carnahan to "get up". No
response coming, he examined the body and found that the aged man was
dead. Mr. Carnahan was born in Ohio, 73 years ago, the
son of
Samuel and Mary Carnahan. He came with his parents to LaGrange county
and Bethel street in Clay township at three or four years of age, his
home thereafter. Mr. Carnahan leaves a widow, two daughters, Mrs.
David M. Ream of Sturgis and Mrs. Julian Doriot of Kansas City,
Missouri, a son, Albert, living in Clay township, a brother, Samuel
Carnahan, of Sherman, Michigan, and two sisters, Mrs. Allen and Mrs.
Naomi Taylor of Clay township. Alexander Carnahan was one of the
strong and sturdy men of the county, of rugged honesty, bluff in his
manner, but considerate and tender at heart. His accidental death has
come as a saddening shock, more especially to his old friends and
neighbors of seventy years in Clay township, and the sympathy of all
our people is with the aged widow and the other members of the stricken
family. #2 - LAGRANGE STANDARD,
DECEMBER 4, 1913 - "HIS LAST DAY" - Alexander Carnahan Was
Driving the Frank W. Wait Car With reference to the death of Alexander
Carnahan, which occurred last Friday afternoon, near Howe, the result
of an automobile accident, the Sturgis Journal of last week said:
"In company with his wife, Mr. Carnahan came to this city to spend
Thanksgiving with his daughter, Mrs. David M. Ream, at 204 North
Jefferson street, as had been the custom for a number of years.
"During his visit Mr. Carnahan expressed the wish to his son-in-law
that he would like to have him purchase a good driving horse, which Mr.
Ream agreed to do. After circulating around town for a few hours, he
entered the Parker & Kenyon livery stable, where Mr. Ream is
foreman, and imparted the information that he was considering the
purchase of an automobile. Nothing more was said until he requested Mr.
Ream to go to the Ford garage on North Nottawa street and look at the
Frank W. Wait car, which Mr. Wright was trying to dispose of. Mr. Ream
pronounced the car in good condition, and the deal was made a little
later. "In the meantime, Mrs. Carnahan becoming worried about the
son they had left at home, decided to take the one o'clock train for
home, leaving her husband to follow, as she supposed, on the later
train. "At the dinner table Mr. Carnahan told his daughter that he had
purchased the car, and that he intended to drive home in it, telling
Mr. Ream that a Mr. Long was going along to drive the car. Mr. Ream
supposed at the time that it was Long of the firm of Curtis & Long.
Instead it was Ray Long, son of Mr. and Mrs. W D. Long, who was to
accompany him. Had Mr. Ream known the true state of affairs he would
have gone along, being an experienced and licensed chauffeur
himself. Contrary to the statement appearing in several papers,
Mr.
Carnahan died from shock, and not from an injury, according to Dr.
Stewart H. Schrock, deputy coroner, who held the inquest and examined
the body. No bones were broken and there was no abrasion of the skin.
#3 - LAGRANGE STANDARD, DECEMBER 4, 1913, "IN
MEMORIAM" Be ye also ready, for in an hour that ye know not the Son of
Man cometh. Death rides aloft on every breeze and lurks in every
flower. It comes with the lightning flash, from the blast of a tornado,
and on sea and land we see its relentless hand. The rich, the poor, the
old, the young must pass under its rod. To our brother the blow
was quick and relentless and his spirit was wafted away in a moment to
that land whence no traveler ever returns. Alexander, son of
Samuel and Mary Carnahan, was born in Marion county, Ohio, March 2,
1841, and departed this life November 28, 1913, aged 72 years,
eight months and 26 days. He came with his parents to Clay when
two years of age and the father settled on land in Section 11 and from
the dense forest burned coal, lumbered, split rails and plowed among
stumps until a good farm and comfortable home was obtained. Those
pioneer days were trying and the hardships many. It was a common thing
to see the boys out at four o'clock with their ox teams, drawing logs
to the mill until school hours, and this in zero weather. Alexander,
Hiram and Samuel lived to see a good farm and plenty for their parents
in their declining years as a reward for their toil. The deceased
was
united in marriage to Sarah Fought, October 12, 1866, and five children
blessed this home. Two died in youth, while Mrs. Lorana Ream of
Sturgis, Albert of Clay and Mrs. Nellie Doriot of Kansas City,
Missouri, with their mother, are left to mourn the loss of a kind
husband and father. He was one of a family of nine children. Six have
passed the river of life, Mrs. Robert Allen and Mrs. Oregon Taylor of
Clay township survive him. The deceased was a hard working
industrious
man and by industry and economy has left a good farm and comfortable
home for his family. In early life he was converted and he united with
the United Brethren church at the Saylor schoolhouse on Bethel
street. The class became disorganized and the members drifted
away and
he never united with any other faith, was a firm believer of the bible
and believed a rest remains on the other shore for the children of God.

Carnahan, Orilla (Tidrick) -
was born on Sept. 18, 1847 at the old Tidrick farm home in Bloomfield
twp.., LaGrange Co., Indiana, two miles north of LaGrange. She
was the daughter of Jacob and Sarah (Rathburn) Tidrick, who were among
the early settler in LaGrange Co. Jacob Tidrick, the father, was
born in Cumberland Co., Maryland, in the Cumberland mountain region,
one of two sons. After the death of his mother, the father and
his two sons located in Ohio. Jacob Tidrick and Sarah Rathburn
were married in Ohio in 1835, and came to LaGrange County in 1836,
settling on what has long been known as the Tidrick farm, now the home
of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Lovell, the latter a daughter. Five of nine
children in the Jacob Tidrick family were born in the old log cabin
home and four were born in the white frame house yet standing, built by
Mr. Tidrick in 1844, 88 years ago. Orilla Tidrick was the sixth
of nine children born in the present Lovell home. She attended
common schools and finished her education in the old LaGrange County
Collegiate Institute at Ontario, preparatory to teaching. She was
a teacher for 8 or 9 years, among her schools being the Saylor, the
*Roy, the Beaty, the Lampman, now the Hoff, and the Donaldson, all
being pioneer names generally known in LaGrange County. Orilla
Tidrick and Hiram Carnahan were married on Nov. 13, 1869 and located on
a farm in Clay twp. Hiram Carpenter was a son of Sarah?? and Mary
A. (Marshone) Carnahan and was born on Dec. 12, 1842 in a house built
by his father on his first farm of 40 acres in Clay twp. His
death occurred on Feb. 11, 1898, in his 56th year. Mr. and Mrs.
Carnahan were the parents of 4 children, only one of whom, Elmer T. of
LaGrange, survive. Jacob S. died on Sept. 25, 1873 at 6 months of
age, Ellis T., twin brother of Elmer T., died on Aug. 17, 1884 at 10
months of age, and Carrie May died in 1913 at 38 years of age.
Mrs. Carnahan and her 2 children, Carrie May and Elmer T. came to
LaGrange from the farm, only two miles north from her birthplace, in
1910, and it was in her home here, only two miles from her birthplace,
that she answered the last call on Wed. evening, July 20, 1932, and
peacefully and painlessly slipped away in the deepening shadows.
She leaves her son, Elmer T., three sisters, Mrs. Emma Lovell, living
gin the old homestead, Etta Tidrick of Topeka, Kansas, and Mrs. E. B.
Smith of Newton, Kansas, and several nieces and nephews. Three
sisters preceded her in death, Anna Tidrick, Mrs. Naomi Strassler, and
Sarah Jane Tidrick, and two brothers, John C. and and infant. It
is given to few to live to 85 years. It is interesting to know
that this old mother died within two miles of her birthplace and that
all of her 85 years were lived in Clay and Bloomfield twps.., and in
the town of LaGrange. She became a member of the Methodist
Protestant church . . . the righteous victory of the north . . .
.and lived with no complaints. . . ** rest of obituary is missing. -

Carnahan, Samuel -
who lived some three miles north west of this place, died on Tuesday
afternoon, under somewhat peculiar circumstances. On Saturday last he
was in town and purchased mourning clothes for his wife and family,
remarking that such clothing would be most appropriate for them. Sunday
morning he sent for Mr. Davis, his nearest neighbor, to whom he gave
money to pay his funeral expenses, stating that he should soon die. He
was up to this time in his usual health, which though has been poor for
several years. He died that afternoon in the presence of his family,
and as far as we can learn without any further cause. Mr. Carnahan was
about fifty years of age, an old and esteemed citizen, and in
comfortable circumstances. His sudden departure will occasion much
surprise and universal regret among his numerous acquaintances.

Case, A. P. - is
living
in the first frame house built in the township and upon the farm enter
by him in 1836. In company with his uncle, David Randall, he left
Astabula County, Ohio, in the spring of 1833, and traveled across the
country on foot to St. Joseph County, Mich., west of Sturgis, where
they soon earned enough to enter the eighty acres of land, in 1836, on
Sections 7 and 18, where, in the spring of 1837, subject, with his
mother, Anna (Randall) Case, and brother, Zopher, located, and for many
years endured the hardships of pioneer life. Zopher Case, father of the
subject, who ranked as Major in the war of 1812, came from Connecticut
at an early day, and settled in Ashtabula County, Ohio, where he died
in 1822, leaving a wife and four small children, among whom was our
subject, who was born in Ashtabula County, Ohio, October 6, 1812. After
coming to this county, his mother kept house for him until he was
married, December 4, 1841, to Miss Elsie Hill, daughter of Aaron and
Permelia (Winston) Hill, natives of New Jersey. They are parents of ten
children - Zopher P., Randall P., Daniel A. (deceased), Elizabeth C.,

Case, C. M. - is a
native of this county, where he was born in Johnson Township, October
8, 1850. His parents were Zopher and Nancy (Highbargin) Case, natives
of Ohio. Zopher Case, with his brother, A.P. Case, and mother, came to
this township in 1837, but subsequently located in Johnson Township,
where he is yet living. The subject, when twenty years of age,
commenced teaching school, and for three years alternated that with
farm labor, during their respective seasons. In 1873, he bought forty
acres of land in Section 17, and his father gave him eighty acres
adjoining. Of this, he sold eighty acres of $3,000 and purchased his
present farm, that ranks among the best in the township in improvements
and appearance. It consists of one hundred acres, twenty of which were
presented to his wife by her father. For the remaining eighty acres he
paid $5,000. The proceeds of this farm for the year 1879 were $2,500;
1880, $2,800; and 1881, $2,000. Mr. Case also raises some of the best
blooded stock in the county. Although quite a young man, he is on the
road to prosperity and belongs to a representative family. He was
married to Miss Mary A. Newman March 17, 1874. She was born in this
township October 17, 1855, and is the daughter of Nicholas B. and Nancy
(Cochran) Newman. They were among the early settlers here, coming in
1835, and lived here until within the last year, when they moved to

Cline,
Mary E. (Spears) - Mrs.
William A. Cline, was born in Springfield
Township, LaGrange County, Indiana,
January 17, 1840. She was one of thirteen children of Tunis and
Mary
Spears, all of whom have preceded her to the eternal home, except one
sister,
Matilda Bassett, and one half brother, Major Sears of Kansas City,
Missouri,
and a half sister, Mrs. Calvin Cline, of Lansing, Michigan. In
1858 she
was united in hold wedlock with William A. Cline. They began
their
married life on the farm, on which she had ever since resided.
For
49 years they toiled together, bearing share and share alike,
the
triumphs and defeats which came to them. She was the mother of
five
children, two sons and three daughters, the eldest of whom died in
infancy,
while four, Mary J. Anderson, Frank B., Nellie E. Hill and Rachel L.
Smith,
survive. There are eleven grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren. Her great love for the home and children
caused her
every effort to have them near her. Her every thought was to
serve and
make comfortable those about her. Her care of her worthy
companion in his
last, long sickness testifies the untiring faith and fortitude which
characterize her life. The responsibility of the financial
affairs, since
the loss of her companion, shows great strength and mental
ability. In
the last few months of failing health she was ever anxious and hopeful
that
relief might come, that she might again mingle with her loved
ones. At
last, however, she realized that her work her was done, and willingly
resigned
herself to her maker. Her loving spirit passed from the time of
trial
into the eternity of triumph which surely waits for faithful
souls. “Yet
not the less, o’er all the heart hath lost, Shall faith
rejoice when nature grieves the most; Then comes her
triumph. Through the shadowy gloom her star glory rises
from the tomb, Mounts to
the day spring, leaves the cloud below, And gilds the
tears that cease to flow. Yes all is o’er! Fear, doubt,
suspense are fled; Le brighter thoughts be with the virtuous dead, The final ordeal
of the soul is past, and the pale brow
is sealed to heaven at last!”
Mrs. Cline passed away at
her
home, May 31, 1917, having lived 77 years, four months and
thirteen
days. Her children and their families through the Standard, make
appreciative acknowledgment of the assistance and sympathy of the
neighbors and
other friends during the long illness and after the death of Mrs.
Cline. –

was born on Thurs., Sept. 22, 1927, and passed from this life on the
evening of Sept.29, 1928, aged one year and seven

the home circle, so sweetly blossoming into baby smiles and darling
winsome ways. Little can be said of so a brief a life, but we
know that the purity and innocence of a little child is
acceptable to Him who long ago placed His hands in blessing upon the
head of a little child. This young life leaves to mourn their

Wakarusa, had just passed the Cline car and was a few rods east. Gulick stopped his car an, with Malone and
with
Malone and Kenneth
Towns and Mrs.
Towns,
also passing, assisted in extricating the several members of the Cline
family
from the wrecked machine. Mr. and Mrs.
Towns brought the family to LaGrange and to the offices of Dr. Grubb,
in their
car. Upon their arrival here it was
discovered that the little girl was dead, her chest having been crushed. Malone took the number of Gulick’s car, but
did not learn the name of the Elkhart
man. Gulick drove home without reporting
the accident at LaGrange, but said that he was about to write down his
recollections for the police in his home city when officers called to
arrest
him. As soon as Sherriff Minnich and
Deputy Sherriff Orville E. Nelson looked up their list of automobile
incenses
they telephoned Elkhart
to hold Gulick there. Coroner John P.
Caton, after preparing the body of the child for burial, instituted an
inquest. He drove over to Steuben County, Sunday morning, to the
home of
Malone’s parents, and took the young man’s affidavit, and questioned
the two
girls who were with him. Malone said
that Gulick had been drinking, that he could smell liquor on his
breath, but he
would not swear that he was intoxicated.
Gulick, in his examination by the coroner said that he had not
been
drinking. Malone swore that Gulick was
driving 45 or 50 miles an hour when he crashed into the Cline machine. Gulick said that he was going about 25 miles. Malone swore that the headlights and the tail
light on the Cline car were burning, even after the machine had been
turned
over into the ditch. Gulick said that he
was confused by the headlights on an approaching machine and had slowed
down. After the other car had passed he
“stepped on the gas” and before he could swing far enough to the south
he
struck the southeast corner of the Cline sedan.
Gulick explains his failure to be coherent in his examination
and his
failure to report the accident at LaGrange by saying that when the
crash came
his nose was jammed into his steering wheel, leaving him in great pain
and more
or less dazed. His nose on Sunday
morning at the county jail was inflamed and considerable swollen. He also said , not being
familiar with the road, having driven
over it only a couple of times, that he thought he was close to
Middlebury, and
that he would make his statement to the police at Elkhart.
Gulick, after remaining in jail over Sunday,
appeared before Judge Carlin in LaGrange Circuit Court, on Monday
morning, to
answer to a charge of involuntary manslaughter, to which he pleaded not
guilty. His bond was fixed at five
thousand dollars, which he furnished in cash by friends, and he was
released to
appear for trial at the November term.
Gulick was represented by William E. Wider and former Judge
James L.
Harman f Elkhart
and Dunten & Dunten of LaGrange.
Prosecutor Thomas of Angola
and Deputy Prosecutor William B. Duff of LaGrange represent the state. Gulick is married, has one child, a son
nine-years-old,
and holds an executive position with the Conn
band instrument company at Elkhart. Those who were injured in the accident
include Mr. Cline, a daughter and a son.
Mr. Cline upon returning to the machine, crawled part way into
the car
to assist in extricating the members of his family.
His right forearm came in contact with broken
glass, cutting a long, deep gash therein and severing the tendons. Donald, the son, has a gash in his right
thigh, severing an artery, and he lost considerable blood, while the
little
girl sustained a gash in her head, which Dr. Jessup closed with several
stitches,
Mrs. Cline was uninjured, but suffered from shock.
Cline’s car is almost a wreck, while the
Gulick coupe escaped with a damaged bumper.
Rev. Clarence L. Robinson had charge of the funeral of the
little girl
who was killed, which was held on Monday afternoon from the Methodist
Episcopal
church at Plato. Burial was made in the Plato Cemetery. Considerable
excitement prevailed in LaGrange
following the accident, and scores of people congregated on the
sidewalk in
front of the offices of Dr. Grubb and Dr. Jessup, where the injured
were
receiving surgical attention, and in front
of the Caton Brothers mortuary, where the body of the little
girl was
taken. As usual many stories were
started and it was not until later in the evening that the facts became
known. Everybody in the community is
sympathizing with the Cline family, in the tragic death of the little
girl, and
community sentiment demands that if criminal guilt is involved a fair
and just
measure of punishment shall be inflicted. - Source:

Cline, Vern Ezra - Farm Leader
Dies, The funeral of Vern Ezra Cline was held at the home near Brushy
Prairie on Sept.. 16 in charge of Rev. LeRoy Kemper of Kokomo, Ind. and
burial took place at Greenwood Cemt. Mr. Cline, prominent farm
leader, passed away Sept. 14 following a long and painful illness. On
Aug. 4, 1912, he was married to Lottie E. Vesey and this union was
blessed with two children, a daughter, Evelyn Edna, who died July 14,
1914, and a son, Hubert Monroe, who is married and now resides at home
and has helped in the care of his father through his long
illness. He was a good leader in his community and always had the
interest of his fellowman at heart. Besides being a prominent
farmer, he found time to take an active part in community
affairs. He was a charter member of the Springfield twp. Farm
Bureau and was instrumental in the organization of the rural
electrification corporation and served on the county board. He
was also a member of the county committee of the AAA and a director of
the Producers Commission Association of Fort Wayne. He lived his
entire life in Springfield twp. and will be greatly missed by his many
friends throughout the county and elsewhere. He leaves to mourn
his departure, his wife and son Hubert, and two brothers Claude and
Charles, both of LaGrange county, and a host of relatives, neighbors,
and friends. - Source: Undated article from Norman Dueslar
Scrapbook Collection, LaGrange, Indiana, June 2008 * Note
from Charlotte Edsall, he was the son of Samuel E. CLine and
Nancy jane Gage Cline. His paternal grandparents were John Cline
and Martha McNutt Cline. John Cline was the son of William Cline
and Ellen Gibney, brother to William A. CLine.
Cline,
William A. - was born in Richland County Ohio, August 8,
1830, and after
having suffered more or less for four years, he quietly, peacefully
passed away
from the home near Plato, Indiana, June 7, 1907 at the age of 76 years,
nine
months, and 23 days. In 1854 he came with his parents to Indiana and in
1858 he was happily married
to Mary E. Spears and settled on this farm where they wrought and
labored for
49 years. Thus for most a half a century they, like two veritable
pilgrims,
have been trudging down life's weary way, bearing it's burdens,
dividing
equally it's cares and toile and sharing untidily in all it's triumphs
and
defeats. To this union there were born 5 children, two sons and three
daughters, the eldest whom died in infancy while four, Frank B., Mary
J.
Anderson, Nellie E. Hill, and Rachel L. Smith survive. He also had
eleven
grandchildren. Mr. Cline belonged to a hardy race, having a vigorous
constitution which served him well when hardships, much labor and rough
usage
constituted the heritage of the early settler but as a reward for all
of these
years you only need look around and behold the present environments.
Mr. Cline
was a man of unswerving integrity, sterling worth with a pure and
stainless
character and having lived in the same community on the same farm for
49 years,
he won and held the respect of all who knew him. He was a faithful and
devoted
husband, and affectionate father, and a noble citizen. He bore his
afflictions
and suffering so patiently that no murmur was ever heard and no
complaint
escaped his lips. While he was not a member of any church, he was a
believer ad
is private life was in harmony with that belief and he expressed
himself to a
friend that he was ready and willing to die. Last Friday morning,
surrounded by
his loved ones, the taper of life gently extinguished. He reached the
end of
his pilgrimage and his spirit sped away to that land from whence no
traveler
returns. The dissolution of this marital union leaves his companion of
many
years- this devoted wife - a lone pilgrim who in "only waiting until
the
shadows have a little longer grown" when she will be reunited with all
her
loved ones in the land of the blessed. She with four children, two
brothers,
George Cline of Angola, Indiana and Samuel Cline of Bloomfield
Township, and
Mrs. Hannah Davidson and Mrs. Sarah Cornell of this vicinity, together
with
many relatives and friends, will miss and mourn this kind husband and
father
and noble citizen. He always greeted his friends with a bright smiling
face. He
was ever cheerful and hoped that each day would bring him relief from
his
sufferings. When all had been done for him that loving hands could do,
he
quietly and peacefully passed away. The last hour, although expected
for many
days, was none the less painful for the loved ones remaining. His
helpfulness
and dependence on the family for so many years has all the more
endeared him to
them and their sorrow at his departure is keenly felt.
"How strange
it seems,
with so much gone of life and love, to still live on! O Mother,
only then art left of the home circle now. The dear
home face whereupon that ______ firelight paled and shown; Hence
forwards, listen, as we will. The voice
of that hearth is still, Look where we may the wild earth o'er, That bright
face will smile no more." Relatives from abroad in
attendance at the services were: William McNutt, Samuel Gage and wife,
Ashley,
Indiana; Albert Hoyarter and wife, Silas Helmer and wife, Charles

Colwell, Joseph
L. - "DIED" On
January 8th, 1880, at
his residence near Onaga, Pottawatomie Co., Kansas, Mr. Joseph L. Colwell , aged
about
fourty-six years. Mr. Colwell was a son of Joseph Colwell,
deceased, late
of this county, who was one of the early settlers of Steuben County.
Joseph L. emigrated to Kansas
some 21 years since, where he found a home, or, we might say, found a
wild,
unsettled country, and by his industry, perseverance and economy, and
with the
aid of his wife, he soon fitted up a comfortable home, and, as we
understand,
has left quite an estate for his family. It would seem that he
acted upon
the principle that it was better to wear out than to rust out, as it is
thought
that hard work has had very much to do in shortening his days. - The

Cornell, Berniece E. (Anderson) - In Bloomfield twp.,
LaGrange Co., Indiana on Feb. 1, 1892, while winter winds and snows
surrounded the home of Orville Anderson and his wife, Mary J. Cline,
there came into that home to brighten its winter gloom and gladden
their hearts, a little baby daughter they christened Bernice E.
The brightness of her ways did not end with the prattle of her baby
voice, but all through her girlhood and schooldays she was ever
shedding sunshine in the home and among the friends that she
loved. She was educated in the public schools of Bloomfield twp
and spent nearly all of her whole life in the community of her
birth. To her was given the privilege of ministering more than
the usual amount to her parents, as she spent the most of her life with
them. It can truly be said of her that never did a mother
have a more loyal daughter, who bade fair to be a prop for her
declining years. Hers was a life of sacrifice, as all through the
years she was ever ready to lay aside her own interests and plans when
duty seemed to call her to the help of the mother she so dearly
loved. In Dec. 1926, she was united in marriage to Charles
Cornell of Auburn. Since her marriage her home has been with her
husband in Auburn, Indiana. Here she endured intense physical
suffering, but through it all she kept a smiling, uncomplaining front,
hiding her own ills as much as possible that she might yet do for
others. When she could endure no longer, she entered the hospital
at Garrett, Indiana , submitting to an operation for gall stones.
Her overwrought system, however, couldn't revive, nature could not
rebuild and on Sept. 1, 1929, a few hours after her operation, she
slipped away into the unknown, that land of eternal sunshine and glory
where suffering and tears and grief are unknown. Cut off in the
prime of her womanhood, we do not understand the why of His ways, but
though we see as through a glass darkly, some day we shall
comprehend. Her joys were many, her sorrows and sacrifices great
and we can but feel that the all merciful Father will say of her,
"Inasmuch as ye ministered unto these, ye ministered unto me." Of
her friends, those preceding her, were her father, Orville
Anderson; one sister, Troas L. Anderson; and her daughter,
Dorothy Horner. She leaves to mourn due in loving memory, her
husband and son, Marion; her mother; one brother, Leon Anderson, and
many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted
on Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Wickersham at the Plato church with burial
in the Brushy Prairie Cemetery by the side of her daughter. - The
