Baker, Alpheus  - was born in Cornwall, Addison County, Vermont, April 14, 1795, where he passed his early life. On Aug. 19, 1820 he married Adelia Burgess, with whom he lived 9 years, when death carried her away, leaving him a widower with 4 small children, 2 sons and 2 daughters, all of whom survive him. On Feb. 7, 1830 he married Mrs. Mercy Mott, a widow with 3 children, who provided a faithful companion for the remainder of his life, a period of 58 years had he lived until the 7th of next month. On the anniversary of her 85th birthday, the wife saw the remains of her husband borne to their final resting place. After his second marriage, being then a resident of Ohio, with a family of 10 children and limited means, like many of the early pioneers, he settled in Noble County Aug. 16, 1836 in a little cabin where the village of Lisbon is now situated, but later moving on his own land half a mile west of Lisbon. At that time this part of Indiana was almost an unbroken wilderness and all the difficulties and perils of a settlement in a new country stared from every side. Dense woods surrounded the place marked out for a home, and Indians were almost the only inhabitant. On the day after arriving in this country he lost his team - almost his all - they having strayed away and supposed to have been taken by the blacklegs that then infested the counties of Noble and LaGrange. He participated in the War of 1812 in that decisive action at Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain. In our late war he was represented by 5 sons in loyal blue responding to our Union call. In 1837 he united with the Methodist Church, a feeble society in Lisbon, and upon the organization of that society in Kendallville he became a member. Nurtured and cared for by and at the residence of his youngest son, Frank, he died Jan. 11. Funeral was at the residence the 13th. Burial, Lisbon Cemetery. - Noble Co., Indiana Obituary on Jan. 20, 1888

Boals, Mary Elizabeth S. (Amsbaugh) -  who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Susan Galloway, 209 South Popular Street, LaGrange, Indiana, was born about four miles East of Mansfield, Ohio, September 6,1824. She was the daughter of Valentine Amsbaugh and Sarah (Riley) Amsbaugh, who came from Miami County, Pennsylvania, to Richland County, Ohio, and settled near Mansfield. She was one eight children, three girls and five boys, namely, George, Nathan, Henry, Riley and Valentine Amsbaugh, and Barbara, and Elizabeth Doe Wilson, the mother of George Doe, Lafayette Doe, Angie Brayton, Emily Bishop, and Sarah Appleman of LaGrange. She was united in marriage to James Boals, October 28,1846, in Richland County, Ohio. She resided at the old home until 1848, when she moved with her husband to Greenwich, Huron County, Ohio. From Huron County they moved to Allen County, October 14,1852, near Maples, in Madison township, where they resided until the death of her husband August 13, 1875. Her husband enlisted and served from March 9,1864 to June 6,1865, in Company G, 13th Cavalry, 131st Regiment of volunteers from New Haven, Indiana. In July of 1886 she was granted a pension for his services in the army. With the pension and the proceeds of the farm, she was able to clear the farm of debt and finish the raising of her children. She continued to live on the farm and at Maples, Indiana, and with her daughter, Mrs. Phillip Fey, until June 1900, when she moved to Ft. Wayne to live with her youngest daughter, then Mrs. Agnes Benedict, to whom she was greatly attached. In the year 1901 she bought a house on Walton Avenue, Ft. Wayne. Her daughter, Mrs. Benedict, moved to the home with her in December 1902. She sold the home farm at Maple and divided the proceeds of the sale, after retaining her 1/3, amongst her children. Shortly after they moved to the Walton Avenue home a separation occurred between her daughter, Mrs. Benedict, and her husband. After the separation the daughter still lived with her until the daughter again married on October 11,1906 to Warren Sweet. After the marriage, on October 4,1907 she made arrangements with her daughter, Mrs. Sweet, and her husband to care for her during the rest of her life. Some time during the year 1910 her daughter, Mrs. Sweet, and her husband acquired an interest in a large farm near Klinger Lake, Michigan and in June 1911 her daughter moved her to Mrs. Boal's son, Wesley Boals, at Maples, Indiana to live until she could again provide her a home, as the distance to Klinger Lake was too far to move her in her feeble condition. She became dissatisfied here and wanted the care of her own daughter. So she decided to make a short visit to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Susan Golloway, at LaGrange, Indiana August 18,, but her age and condition were more than she could stand and she continued to grow weaker and weaker until she died. In the fall of 1906 she contracted a violent cold, which left her in such condition that she was confined to her bed the greater part of the time until her death. Soon after coming to Allen County she united with the Dunkard Church under Reverend Jerry Gump and was a devoted christian until she passed to the great beyond. She was anointed on Sept. 7th the day before she died, by Rev. Noah Shutt of near Brighton. She understood the services and answered a number of questions, but during the night she became unconscious and could not be aroused and remained so until the end. She leaves to mourn her absence nine loving children, Mrs. Emily Fey(or Fry) of Monroeville, Indiana; Ansyvilla Adams, Baker City, Oregon; Mrs. Florence Fey of Maples, Indiana; Mrs. Letticia Fisher of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; Mrs. Susan Galloway, LaGrange, Indiana; Mrs. Agnes Sweet of Klinger Lake, Michigan; Westly Boals of Maples, Indiana; and Nevada Boals of North Clinton Street, Ft. Wayne, Indiana. 30 grandchildren living and no dead; 42 great grandchildren living and seven dead; and one great great grandchild living. Funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Susan Galloway, at LaGrange, Indiana at nine o'clock on Monday morning, Sept., 11 by Rev. Noah Shutt and at the Dunkard Church by the pastor of the church and interment was made in the Odd Fellows cemetery at New Haven, Indiana. Boesinger, Simon was born near Stuttgart, Wuertemburg, Germany on Nov. 28, 1838.  At the age of 21 he went to Switzerland and worked at his trade at various places in that country during the succeeding nine years.  In the summer of 1868 he came to LaGrange, Indiana where he has since resided.  He married Miss Mary Baumgartner, Feb. 12, 1871.  To them were born 3 sons;  John, Frederick M., and George E., the second son dying in infancy.  After an illness of only a few days he died, January 14, 1909 at the age of 70 years, one month and 16 days, leaving a widow, two sons, a cousin Miss Emma Dick, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. J. F. Boesinger, and a host of friends to mourn his departure.  Mr. Boesinger was a man of quiet tastes and habits.  The simple life with him was a practice and not a theory.  After the work of the day and the week, in his home with his family about him was he happiest.  But his interest, while centered about his work and his home, were not wholly confined to these.  He was a religious man, a member of the Presbyterian church and it was his constant pleasure while in health to be in attendance upon divine worship.  He was also a member of the subordinate lodge and encampment of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a connection he valued highly.  As a citizen he was interested in the commonwealth and kept informed as to the issues drawn, never failing to exercise his franchise, in support of the truth as he saw it.  The unconscious influence of his daily life was greater than he suspected.  It was the silent power of an unselfish life based upon truth, duty, industry, integrity, and love.  He was trusted and respected by all who knew him. - "The LaGrange Standard," LaGrange, Ind., January 9, 1909  * (BELOW OBIT) The family of the late S. Boesinger desires to express their deep sense of gratitude and obligation to Mr. Slagle, to the lodge of Odd Fellows and to the many friends and neighbors who gave their help and sympathy during the hour bereavement.

Bolley, Blanche Eliza - died July 23, 1918 in Sturgis, Michigan, BLANCHE BOLEY PASSES AWAY / Died At The Home of Sabrosky Family / Every Possible Effort Was Made To Save Life Of Young Lady Who Had Host Of Friends.  A particularly sad death occurred at 11:15 o'clock last night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Sabrosky, S. Jefferson St., where Miss Blanche Boley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Boley, of Mongo, gave up the fight and surrendered to the call of her maker.  For some time in the past Miss Boley, who was 23 years of age, had been suffering from an affliction which threatened peritonitis.  This developed Saturday and as the condition of the patient demanded an operation, the attending physician called two Mongo physicians into consultation, and it was determined to resort to the knife in the endeavor to save Miss Boley's life.  The patient failed to rally, gradually lost vitality and the end came last night just after the big storm had cleared away.  Every possible effort was made to spare the life of the young woman, but the best of medical skill and nursing failed.   The parents of Miss Boley were in attendance at the bedside from the time of the operation to the end.  Miss Boley was a splendid type of girl, just budding into womanhood.  She claimed a host of friends who will miss her gentle way and winning smiles.  Prior to her illness she was employed as stenographer at the Miller & Long office and during her stay in this city made her home with the Sabrosky family.  Besides her parents she is survived by two brothers, both of whom are in the army.  Brief services were held from the Sabrosky residence this afternoon and the body was taken to the Boley home near Mongo, where the funeral and burial will be held. - Contributed  to the LaGrange GenWeb by Burt Fuller

He is mourned by his father and mother and three sisters and three brothers, on sister, Blanche, having gone into that great beyond only a short time before him.  Wenzel was a sincere member of the Progressive Brethren church at Brighton and was true to his Master until he called him home.  He was a noble, loving, Christian young man and took special interest in the home and all it held dear. Bolley, Electia Emily "Peg" (Minch)  -  died June 25, 2002 in Diamondale, MI - BOLLEY, ELECTIA EMILY "PEG" (MINCH) Lansing, MI.  Electia Emily "Peg" (Minch) Bolley was born in Howe, IN., December 31, 1899 and died June 25, 2002 in Dimondale, MI.  As she chose to be cremated, all whose lives Electia touched are invited to a memorial celebrated for her on Tuesday, July 2, at 7:00 p.m. at Lansing Central United Methodist Church.  After living a full life of 102 years, she watched the ages pass from "horse-and-buggy-days" to wondrous probing of outer space and greeted every change in awe of hope of even better things to come.  Good times and hard times were a part of her life: a happy childhood, grieving, grieving when siblings and many friends died during the flu epidemic of 1918, seeing her brothers go off to WWI, burying her parents, all of her six siblings, her husband, and four of her six children ... her husband, Harold Joseph Bolley (1964); two sons: John Jacob (1989) and Donald Willard (1976); Donald's wife, Mary Beth (Reid) 1978); a daughter, Janice Jane (1961); and a baby son, Winthrop Lynn (1931).  Two daughters and daughter-in-law survive her: Jeanne Joy Snyder (Luvern), Joanne Joyce Gorsline, and John's wife Sonja.  Also 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren.  "Peg" worked 28 years at the J.W. Knapp store (downtown Lansing) in the yard goods department retiring at age 72. - Contributed  to the LaGrange GenWeb by Burt Fuller

Bolley, Elizabeth (Doerrer)  -  died September 25, 1922 - In Ashland county, Ohio, on September 3, 1836, a daughter, Elizabeth, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Dorerrer.  In 1859 she was united in marriage to Jacob Bolley.  To this union were born eight children, three sons and five daughters.  Mrs. Bolley departed this life on September 24, 1922, at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Henry Misner, near Olive Lake.  Her husband and three daughters preceded her to the spirit world.  Three sons are living, Jacob, William and Albert, and two daughters, Mrs. Albert Case and Mrs. Daniel Ackermire.  Three brothers Emanuel of Helmer and Frank and Edwin of Ashland, Ohio, 28 grandchildren, thirty-three great great grandchildren and many friends and neighbors are left to mourn their loss.  In 1870 she came from Ohio with husband and family and settled on a farm in Milford township, LaGrange county, where they resided until the husband was disabled and compelled to retire from active life.  After this, the rearing of the family was left to her and to her alone.  No on knows what she suffered and endured through those lonely years, for uncomplainingly and yet smiling, she suffered through.  She was unusually ambitious and active both in youth and in age and always ready to help those in need.  Being a member of the German Lutheran church since early womanhood and a firm believer in her God, she left us without fear.  - Contributed  to the LaGrange GenWeb by Burt Fuller from the "LaGrange Standard," September 29, 1922

Booth, John Quincy in addition to the obituary already published, we take the following sent in by one acquainted with his early life and personal history.  At 18 years of age, he commenced teaching school and taught 16 terms in Homes and surrounding counties.  He united with the M. E. Church in early life and was an ardent worker in the church and Sabbath School for a number of years and remained a consistent member of this organization until his death.  His father was an abolitionist and kept a station on the underground railway and he acted as conductor.  Many a poor slave was sheltered and carried on twelve miles to the next station under the shades of night.  By teaching school and clearing land and practicing strict economy he had saved  $1,400 and with their team and wagon they started for Indiana in April of 1861.  They had only gone a short distance when the met Capt. James Drake, father of Hon. J. S. . Drake, and he told them that Fort Sumptner had been fired upon.  They first settled southwest of Lima , where they remained for the first summer.  Then moving his family to Lima he commenced teaching school in the Plank district on the west side of Pretty Prairie.  In the Spring of 1862, he rented an 80 acre farm in Springfield twp. of Geo. P. Robinson.  That winter he taught in the Haskins district which was his last term of school.  Before the year had expired he had purchased the farm and he kept adding to it until he owned 160 acres.  In 1875, he sold his farm to John Fair for $12, 800 and them purchased on the opposite dies of the road 440 acres of Hamilton Aldrich for $15,000/  Here he built the commodious dwelling that was his home until his death.  Foreseeing the fail in the value of property, he converted all but 200 acres of his land into cash.  In politics, he was a republican, voting with that party.    - This Information was taken from the personal Scrapbook of Homer Brown's estate (Brushy Prairie) that was donated to the LaGrange Historical Society by Mr. & Mrs. Cecil Hayward.

He was married to Miss Catherine Engle, March 13, 1831, and soon after moved to Tucarawas county, Ohio, where they lived a few years and then came to Indiana, and after living in Noble County several years, came to Clay in 1854.  From that time until his death he was well known by the name of  James Boyd. James & Catherine Boyd were parents of eighteen children, fourteen of them are alive and have families.  Father Boyd was a hard working industrious man, and for truth and honesty none surpassed him, although a poor man the needy always found shelter beneath his roof, and a beggar was never thrust away from his door.  He was a member of the German Baptist church for many years and lived in accordance with their doctrine.  For nearly three years he was deprived of his reason and was almost a child again. But during the sad years of his declining life he was kindly cared for by his children and friends. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Bradford, Capt. Samuel P. -  died at a half-hour past noon, yesterday, during a period of unconsciousness which had begun a day or two before.  On the 21st day of December 1886, Captain Bradford, on awakening from a sleep he took in the forenoon, found half his body paralyzed.  Some months later he recovered sufficiently to walk about with the aid of a cane, and he began and had since continued a brave fight for his life against the fatal disease which had attacked him.  During recent months, however, he had slowly lost strength, and a few days ago the hand of death began rapidly to arrest his bodily and mental functions.  He was one of the most prominent men of the county and the oldest native resident, his birth having occurred on English Prairie, April 11, 1832.  For eight years he filled with particular ability the office of clerk of the circuit court, and in political affairs and local enterprises he was active and influential.  His long illness has tempered the sadness of his loss, but it will, nevertheless, be felt with unusual keeness by the thousands who knew and respected the brave soldier, the faithful public servant, the kind friend and genial companion, Sam Bradford. - Source: LaGrange Standard, LaGrange, Indiana, April 1890

Butler, John Adams - was born in Sherbook, Quebec, Canada in 1833 and died in LaGrange, Ind. in 1854.  He became a physician and surgeon in LaGrange, Indiana before the Railway came.  He is buried in Lima, Indiana and on his headstone was placed the words, "Friend of Lyceum."  His general practice, riding through the swamps in all weather terminated in pneumonia or "quick consumption" early in life.  He married Lucinda Brown, called Laura, daughter of Frederick Brown of Wadsworth, Ohio.  She was a descendent of Peter Brown of Mayflower fame.  Laura Brown was a graduate of Granville Female Seminary, later Dennison University.  She later married Francis J. Smith and lived at White Lake near Pontiac, Michigan. (1820-1893)  Mr. and Mrs. Butler  had 2 sons, Thaddeus and Marcus.  Thad Butler was a newspaper man and lived in Wabash, Indiana and Huntington and married Kate Sivey of Wabash.  The following is a small history of the family: "  Legend is that the Butlers were English sympathizers and fled to Canada.  They returned to the United Sates; there were 2 sons, John Adams Butler and George Washington Butler.  The two brothers came west together.  Another account: "residing a few years before in Vermont, John Butler moved to Sherbook and there 2 sons, G. W. Butler and J. A. Butler were raised."  The father of John Adams Butler was Capt. John Butler, reputed to be the son of Zebulon Butler, called, "Capt. Jack." and fought with Gen. jackson in New Orleans in the War of 1812 against the British.  John Butler was presented a sword by grateful residents of the Mohawk Valley for organizing and commanding as Captain, squads of soldiers that resisted the Indiana raids organized by the British during the War of 1812.  Related to Dr. Thaddeus Butler, on e of the children of Joseph Butler moved to Haverhill, VT (New Hampshire) and married a daughter of Col. Timothy Bedel before 1783.  This line is not clearly established.  "A pre-war incident of John Adams Butler as told by Thad Butler . . . The Presbyterian minister came to the house and argued the rights and benefits of negro slavery.  The better part of the moral argument fell to Dr. Butler where upon the minister got the Bible and began quoting it.  Finally Dr. Butler and the minister came to blows, rolled on the floor, upsetting and breaking the table legs and set an example for the nation to follow in the settlement of this problem.  Heresy in the family said he was an active in helping runaway slaves; may have been a part of the Underground railway.  A history of the Butler family was published in 1898 by a  Priest of Sherbrook. - Source:  Betty B.
