La Porte County Delayed Birth Index

Consolidated La Porte County, Indiana, Delayed Births Index

The following list names 2,505 people who sought official judicial determination of their birth information in La Porte County courts in the 1930s to 1950s. The implementation of the Social Security Act in 1937 stipulated that applicants fill out forms requiring data about their birth, family status, and employment. Not only were millions of files created for members of our families, it forced many of our relatives, who until then had no recorded birth, to go to the local county clerks or state office of vital statistics to file a delayed birth certificate. Like most court records, they are public records. They are not to be confused with official birth records. They were not created near the time of birth and are subject to accidents, errors, and memories fading with the passage of time.

The volunteer abstractor of these records for the La Porte County, Indiana, Genealogy Society was Joan McCoy, and, through the combined efforts of Joan McCoy and Harold Henderson, the index created, appears on this database page. It combines records created in La Porte and Michigan City.

Until June 2014, these records were in the custody of the La Porte County Clerk and were abstracted from the La Porte County Courthouse, Clerk's Office. They are, however, no longer available at the courthouse.

Information for specific individuals is available through the genealogical society. After checking the index for a surname (full name), you may request a look-up of the person. Send an email to [email protected] with word Publications in the subject line. Lookups for society members is free except for postage of mailed copies.
