Lawrence County History

Lawrence County map.Lawrence County was formed on March 1, 1818 from Orange and Washington Counties. It was named after Capt. James Lawrence who fought in the War of 1812. He is remembered for uttering the words 'Don't give up the ship'. The county seat was moved from Palestine in 1825 to Bedford. It remains there today.

Neighboring counties are: Greene, Jackson, Martin, Monroe, Orange and Washington.

Lawrence County is divided into 9 townships. They are: Bono, Guthrie, Indian Creek, Marion, Marshall, Perry, Pleasant Run, Shawswick and Spice Valley.

Lawrence County is known for it's high quality quarried limestone. The Empire State Building, The Pentagon, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Yankee Stadium in The Bronx, New York, the Tennessee State Capitol and Rockefeller Center feature Indiana limestone from Lawrence County.
