Elizabeth Katurah Liester Allison was born July 21, 1859, in Juanita County PA, and came with her parents to Noble County IN. The family settled at Avilla IN.
When she was only 13 years old she joined the Evangelical Church there under the pastorate of Rev. Incle. In 1874 the family moved to Scott, LaGrange County. Here her membership was transferred to the Methodist Church.
On July 20, 1881, she was married to Edward E. Allison. To this union were born two children, John K. and Fred L. Mrs. Allison passed away at the home of her niece at Middlebury the 21st of May of this year (1939).
Besides the two sons, she is survived by three grandaughters, Evangeline Troyer, June Nelson, and Irene Weirick, all of Shipshewana, and one grandson, Edmund Allison of Flint MI, and five great-grandchildren, and many friends who mourn her departure.

James Edwin Hagerty was born in Scott IN, February 20, 1853, and died June 7, 1939, aged 86 years, 3 months and 18 days. He was married to Mary Young in May 1876. To them were born three children, Jesse E., Hubert, and Grace, all of whom including the mother having preceded him in death. In March 1883 he was married to Clara Conrad to whom was born one son, Ray of Elkhart. The mother passed away in September 1886. In 1889 he was married to Ella Harris of Batavia MI, she having died in Scott in February 1896. Mr. Hagerty was the son of James and Clarissa Munger Hagerty. His father was born in the county of Donegal, Ireland, in 1816, coming to this country at the age of three years with his parents. His mother was born in the state of New York in 1817, and is said to have been the first school teacher in Van Buren Township. He is survived by one son Ray, 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, also one half brother Emmet B. Hagerty with whom he has lived for the past four and one-half years, and one half sister Ida Adele Troyerof Duluth MN.

ARTHUR MALONE
August 2, 1940
Arthur Malone, 66, died last Friday evening at his home near Seybert after having been ill since February. He was born in Clay Township, LaGrange County, October 27, 1873, the son of John and Anna Fleck Malone. He was married to Jessie Kriegh on December 12, 1897, at Sturgis MI. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Julia Spear of Benton Harbor MI, and Mrs. Emmet Krugh of Seybert, and three brothers, William Malone of near Howe, and Melvin and Harvey of Oregon.
The funeral services were held at the Marion Church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with burial in the Sidener Cemetery.

Death of MRS. TRUESDEL1940
Emma J. Truesdel, wife of George E. Truesdel, passed away at her home in Shipshewana, September 17, at the age of 61, following an operation April 1, after which complications set in. She was born in 1879 near White Pigeon MI, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Baer. She was married to Arthur E. Poyser in 1901 who died nine years later.
She was married April 14, 1914, to George F. Truesdel. Surviving beside the husband is a sister, Mrs. Charles Klick of Elkhart, an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Seth Bottomley of White Pigeon and many cousins.
Mrs. Truesdel was an active member of the Methodist Church and leaves many friends to mourn her loss.
The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, with services at the house at two o'clock and at 2:30 at the Methodist Church. The burial will be in the Middlebury Cemetery. The Rev. James F. Stephenson will officiate.

MISS ONA FOSTER
Shipshewana IN: Funeral services for Miss Ona Foster, 57, who died at 5 p.m. Friday at her home here, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Keightley Cemetery.
Miss Foster was born April 20, 1882. Her father, Elijah, was a Civil War Veteran. Miss Foster never married. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Oda Whisler and Mrs. Jesse Nole of White Pigeon MI; a brother, Alta Foster of Michigan; a daughter, Mrs. Eva Herman of Shipshewana, and one grandchile.

MRS. BELINDA MILLER Dies Near Shipshewana October 12, 1942 Mrs. Belinda Miller, aged 69, died Monday evening 2 miles southwest of Shipshewana following a lingering illness. The funeral services were held in the Forks Church, Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 with the burial in a nearby cemetery.
She was born June 2, 1873, in Holmes County OH. She was brought to this vicinity in her girlhood by her parents, Jacob and Lucinda Hostetler Nehl. The survivors are the husband, John D. Miller, six children, Otis Miller, Kent IN, Harold of Middlebury; five sisters, Mrs. Perry J. Miller of Shipshewana; Mrs. Dan Holley and Vernon Miller of Middlebury. Five sisters, Mrs. Edna Mishler of Shipshewana; Mrs. Clara Risser of Goshen; Mrs. Carrie Yoder and Mrs. Cora Hostetler of Topeka; and one brother Otis Nehl of Middlebury. Perry J. Miller, one of the sons, is superintendent of the Shipshewana School.

Walter Altland, age 66, died last Thursday about midnight, having sustained a broken neck that afternoon when he from the mower. Mr. Altland had been in the field mowing. He was subject to epilepsy and suffered a stroke Thursday afternoon while in the field mowing. He fell from the mower, the wheel of which passed over his neck. He was takehn to the Constantine (MI) Hospital where late that night he passed away.
He was born November 3, 1874, the son of Cornelius and Frances Altland. All his life he lived in LaGrange County, in the region in which he was born. He received his education in the Scott School. As a young man he was a telephone lineman. He also worked for the late Dr. A.J. Hostetler for some time. He was married August 13, 1896. Mr. and Mrs. Altland were the parents of one daughter, Verna.
He is survived by the widow, the daughter, one sister and one brother. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the home with Rev. G.A. Steeby officiating and burial was made in the White Pigeon Cemetery.

MRS. CAROLINE SCHWARTZ
March 8, 1939
Mrs. Caroline Schwartz, 87, of Van Buren Township, died Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.H. Bryant, in Battle Creek MI, where she was spending the winter. She was the widow of Christian Schwartz.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Bryant and Mrs. Katherine Sutherland of Battle Creek, and four sons, Fred of LaGrange County, Chris of Vicksburg MI, William of San Jose CA, and Charles of Kalamazoo MI. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the Evangelical Church at Crampton's Corners, west of Howe. Burial will be in Twin Lakes Cemetery, also west of Howe.

Mrs. Mary Ann (Yoder) Schrock, 82, wife of Daniel J. Schrock, died this morning at the family's farm home, 2 miles west of Shipshewana.
The daughter of Daniel Y. and Susanah (Ream) Yoder, she was born November 1, 1860, in Somerset County PA. She was married January 22, 1882, to Mr. Schrock. Of their 7 children, 3 preceded her in death.
Surviving besides the husband are 2 daughters, Mrs. Harvey Bontrager and Mrs. Rollin Mishler, both of Middlebury; 2 sons Grant of Howe and Jacob at home, and a sister, Mrs. Lizzie Miller, and brother, Marcellus, both of near Shipshewana. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the home and at 2 p.m. at the Shore Mennonite Church, which she joined when she was quite young. The Revs. Josiah J. Miller and D.D. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Shore Cemetery.

Henry Oppenlander, a former restauranteur and baker of Shipshewana died at his hlme in Wolcottville IN, Friday evening, aged 34 years. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church, Sunday afternoon at that place.
Deceased was a native of Germany. He went from here to Wolcottville about four years ago, where he has been engaged in the restaurant and baking business.
Several weeks ago he submitted to an operation for appendicitis. Complications followed and during the past month he slowly lost his vitalityt. Sunday he became unconscious and remained in that condition until the end came.
He is survived by his parents, two brothers and two sisters in Germany and two brothers and a sister in this country. A sister lives in Fort Wayne IN and two brothers near Bucyrus OH. He was highly esteemed in the community, was thrifty and well to do.
He was a member of the LaGrange K.P. Lodge and the ritual of the order was used in the burial ceremonies. Rev. Reese of the Evangelical Church delivered the discourse.

WILLIAM D. MARKLEY Dies at Age 90
William Markley died at the age of 90 years at the LaGrange County Hospital at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 1957. He had been ill for two weeks and was at the hospital for one week. The remains were taken to the Shoup Funeral Home at Howe, where friends may call before the service to be hdld at the Scott Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Friday. Rev. LaVerne Skinner will be in charge. Burial will be at the Lupold Cemetery.
The deceased was born in Kosciusko County IN but had lived in LaGrange County most of his life. For some years he had lived with his son, Sidney, near Scott IN. Surviving, in addition to the son, are a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Wheeler of Elmford NY; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be: Niley Wisler, Ralph Bassett, Edwin Boehmer, Russell Sink, Ira Swartzentruber, and Eli Miller.

Monroe G. Deter, well known and highly respected farmer of four and a half miles southwest of LaGrange, died very suddenly at his home last Friday night at the age of 76 years and 11 months. He had gone about at his usual tasks during the day and had driven to LaGrange and attending to business matters, apparantly as well as ever. In the evening he enjoyed his newspaper and a radio program and prepared to retire when he was stricken and life was snuffed out in a moment.
Funeral services were held at the farm home on Monday afternoon with the Rev. W.E. Weber, pastor of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial was made in the family lot at Greenwood Cemetery. The following sketch of his life is supplied: Monroe G. Deter, son of Reuben I. and Sarah Deter, was born in Clay Township, LaGrange County IN, on October 16, 1862, and departed this life September 15, 1939.
He was the fourth of a family of eight children, two brothers of whom survive.
He had been a life-long resident of LaGrange County, with the exception of four and a half years and had lived 42 years at the farm home in Clearspring Township.
On August 9, 1891, he was united in marriage to Caroline J. Deetz, also of LaGrange County. To this union were born four sons, Vern, Ross, Ernest, and Earl; Ernest having died in infancy.

Lewis C. Maggart of near Shipshe died - 1939
Lewis C. Maggart died at the age of 62 years at his farm home near Shipshewana Lake last Friday afternoon, November 24. The funeral was held at the home Monday forenoon in charge of Rev. J.F. Stephenson, pastor at Shipshewana and Middlebury. Burial took place at the Fairfield Cemetery near Kendallville IN, where the family formerly lived.
Mr. Maggart died after an illness of four weeks. He was the son of Isaac and Mary Ann Montz Maggart. He is survived by his wife, Vera, and two brothers, Jonathan and Milton, who made their home with him.

Julia Cowley Eddy, wife of George Eddy of the Shipshewana vicinity, died last Saturday, August 12, 1939, at the age of 79 years and one month, after an illness of nine months. She was born in Howe IN July 12, 1860.
She was the daughter of Stephen and Adelia Cowley. On March 15, 1882, she was united in marriage with George A. Eddy at LaGrange in which county they lived over 50 years. On March 15, 1939, they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary with their immediate family.
Five children were born to this union; Mrs. Keightley (Margaret) Hulbert of Shipshewana, Mr. Gordon K Eddy of Detroit MI, Mr. Stephen A. Eddy of Sturgis, Mrs. Cyrus Bowdish of Mendon MI, and one son who died in infancy. Besides her husband and children she leaves to mourn her loss one sister, Mrs. Delia Gouter of Big Creek CA, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a host of friends and relatives.
Funeral services were held at the Bethel Church and burial was at the Keightley Cemetery, Monday afternoon.

Mrs. Rosa Crampton, widow of Charles Crampton of Scott IN, died Thursday, April 28, 1938, at the home of her son, Carl Crampton, north of Klinger Lake, where she went a week ago. Mrs. Crampton, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Casper Weiss, was born July 13, 1872, in the house in Scott IN, where she spent her entire life. She was married September 7, 1890, to Charles Crampton, who died March 16, 1931. Besides the son there are one daughter, Erma, at home, and three grandchildren. The funeral will be held at the Scott M.E. Church Sunday at 1:30 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Mr. Girton of Howe. Burial will be in Scott Cemetery.

Word has been received by friends of the death of Mrs. Fonda Sixbey, which occured last Saturday at the home of her son, Clifford Sixby, near Newaygo MI. Funeral services were held at Newaygo Tuesday with burial there. Mrs. Sixby, about 77, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Galloway. A number of years ago she lived in Scott IN and Shipshewana IN. Her husband, Fred Sixby, died July 1, 1901. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Helen, and a son, James.

Adam J. Miller, 70, a retired farmer, died in his home at Emma early this morning. He was stricken with paralysis two weeks ago. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday.

SHIPSHEWANA IN February 15, 1939
Mrs. Amanda Mishler, 77, died today at her home, two and a half miles southeast of here, after an illness of one month, from heart disease.
The daughter of John and Barbara Miller, she was born August 21, 1861, on a farm not far from that which became her home. Her marriage to James Mishler took place February 28, 1899. Surviving are the husband, four children and seven step-children. The children are Ira Mishler and Mrs. Elva Nelson and Mrs. Perry Nelson, all of Shipshewana, and Claude Mishler of Middlebury. The step-children are Albert Mishler of Portland OR, William Mishler of Eugene OR, Oliver Mishler of Elkhart IN, Mrs. Ira E. Yoder of Middlebury and Mrs. Jerry Troyer, Mrs. Joseph Nelson, and James E. Mishler, of Shipshewana. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Shore Church, with burial in the Miller Cemetery.

Following an 18-month illness of tuberculosis, Miss Jennie Gehres, 45, daughter of Joseph Gehres, died at 3 a.m. today at her home. Miss Gehres was born in Clinton County IN, October 29, 1893, the daughter of Joseph and Isabel Gehres. She is survived by her father; one brother, Paul Gehres; and an adopted nephew, Glen Everett Gehres, all of Shipshewana. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. R.B. Hawkins and Mrs. J.R. Ford of Kendallville IN. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in theMethodist Episcopal Church in Scott IN. Burial will be in Pretty Prairie Cemetery.

LAGRANGE IN June 3, 1938
Dr. Henry W. Shrock, 83, oldest practicing physician in LaGrange County, died at 10:30 this morning after three weeks illness of pneumonia, influenza and heart disease. He was active in his practice, which he started 65 years ago, until three weeks ago. Born in Holmes County OH on December 25, 1854, Dr. Shrock graduated from the Medical College in Cincinnati OH, and took post-graduate work at the University of Michigan. He first located at Middlebury IN, later moved to Shore IN in LaGrange County, from there to Shipshewana, and finally came to LaGrange in 1894. He leaves his wife, Carrie Wolfe Shrock; a daughter, Mrs. John H. Will of LaGrange; three grandsons; one one great-granddaughter, and a sister, Mrs. T.B. Aishe of Shipshewana. The body is at the Carney-Fruip Funeral Home at LaGrange.

GILBERT MALONE May 24, 1970
Gilbert Malone, 72, Elkhart, died Sunday at 3:25 a.m. in the Elkhart General Hospital where he had been a patient for eight weeks.
He was born in Shipshewana March 8, 1897, the son of Walter and Emma (Hubbard) Malone. He was married September 6, 1935, to Evah Miller of Shipshewana, his only survivor.
Malone, a self-employed carpenter, had worked the last several months as a guard at Blazon Mobile Home in Elkhart. He had resided in the Shipshewana area until the last 35 years. Funeral services were held yesterday at 11 a.m. in the Miller Funeral Home in Middlebury with the Rev. Floyd Quenzer officiating.
Burial was in the Woodruff Cemetery, south of LaGrange.

J.T. HUBBARD Dies February 9, 1957
Joseph T. Hubbard, 78, died on Sunday in the Elkhart General Hospital, where he had been taken Saturday evening. Mr. Hubbard was born in LaGrange County on September 26, 1878, and married the former Catherine Loomis, who survives at their home in Bristol IN. Other survivors are four children, Joseph T. Hubbard, Jr., Mrs. Ralph Kimes, Mrs. Merle Strawser and Mrs. Merl Kimes, all of Bristol; one step-son, Vernon D. Loomis of Constantine MI; seven grandchildren and one brother, Arthur F. Hubbard of Shipshewana. Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Wagner Funeral Home in Bristol, with interment in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Bristol.

MRS. KATHERINE A. PROUGH November 5, 1938
Mrs. Katherine Almeda Prough, 66, wife of Willard Prough, died Saturday at their farm home in Eden Township, LaGrange County, 10 miles east of Goshen.
Mrs. Prough was born in Clinton Township, Elkhart County, July 29, 1872, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Bryner. Her marriage to Mr. Prough took place October 19, 1890. She was a member of the Lutheran Church.
Surviving are her husband, nine children, Mrs. Willis Shank, Sam Prough, John Prough, Mrs. Lawrence Myers, Mrs. Noble Shirk and Miss Wilma Prough, all of Goshen. Charles Prough of Shipshewana. Mrs. Eugene Sheffield, of Auburn IN, and Mrs. Clyde Green, of Millersburg IN, 12 grandchildren, and a brother, Orlin Bryner, of east of Goshen.
Funeral services will be held at the home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon and at 2:30 at the Fish Lake Lutheran Church. The Rev. G.C. Goering will officiate. Burial will be made in Forest Grove Cemetery.

MRS. ELLA HOSTETLER November 18, 1938
Mrs. Ella Hostetler, 73, widow of Dr. A.J. Hostetler, who founded the hospital at LaGrange, died this morning at her home at LaGrange, following several years illness. She was born August 16, 1865, in Noble County IN, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abram H. Smith. Surviving are three foster daughters, Mrs. Calvin J. Schrock of Detroit MI, Mrs. H. Ort Sigler of LaGrange, and Marie Hostetler at home; four brothers, Charles L. Smith, Howard and Edwin D. Smith, all of Ligonier IN, and Bruce T. Smith of Toledo OH, and a sister, Mrs. Walter Robinson of Ligonier. Mrs. Hostetler was married to Dr. Hostetler in 1888. He died in June, 1932.
The body is at Caton Bros. Funeral Home. The services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the LaGrange Methodist Church, with burial in Oak Park Cemetery at Ligonier.

MRS. SOPHIA HERSHBERGER March 24, 1938
Mrs. Sophia Hershberger, 74, widow of Noah Hershberger, died this morning at her home in the Shore community, two miles south of Shipshewana. She had been afflicted with heart trouble for a long period of time.
The daughter of Leonard and Catherine (Eash) Emmert, she was born in LaGrange County March 15, 1864. Surviving are one son, John, of Topeka; four daughters, Mrs. John Hershberger of Orville OH, Mrs. James Mason and Mrs. Jonas Eash of Elkhart and Katie Hershberger at home; 21 grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Josiah Miller, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Shore Mennonite Church with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

MRS. AMANDA SCHWEITZER May 31, 1938
Mrs. Amanda Troyer Schweitzer, 72, died at noon today at her home in Shipshewana, after more than two months illness. She was born in Eden Township, LaGrange County, on January 25, 1886, the daughter of Adam and Mary Troyer. She had lived in Shipshewana for 36 years.
On March 24, 1885, she was married to George J. Schweitzer, at White Pigeon MI. He died in 1932. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Alva (Faye) Thompson of Indianapolis and Mary Katherine at home; a son, Clyde H. Schweitzer of Pontiac IL; a step-daughter, Dr. Ada Schweitzer of Indianapolis; a stepson, Willard Schweitzer of Howe; and a sister, Mrs. Lydia Seybert of LaGrange. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Methodist Church at Scott, where she was a member. Burial will be in the Sidener Cemetery, west of Howe. The body is at the Shoup Funeral Home in Howe.

AMANDA YODER BONTRAGER
Amanda, daughter of Daniel S. and Catherine Yoder, was born on August 28, 1870, in Elkhart County IN, and passed away at her home near Shipshewana on May 9, 1940, at the age of 69 years, eight months and 11 days.
She was united in marriage to Joseph M. Bontrager on November 10, 1895. To this union were born six children, Celestia (Mrs. W.H. Schrock) of Hutchinson KS, Oliver of Middlebury, Nina at home, Leona (Mrs. John G. Miller), Melvin and Willis of Shipshewana.
She united with the Mennonite Church in her youth and remained faithful through the years. She was a kind and devoted mother. In the neighborhood she was always ready to lend a kind and helping hand whenever there was a need.
She leaves to mourn her departure her loving companion, three sons, three daughters, eight grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

SEPTEMBER 1941
Funeral services for Seth P. Hershberger, 81, widely known farmer of the Shipshewana community who was instantly killed late Thursday afternoon in an automobile crash, were held Sunday afternoon at the Shore Church at 2:00 o'clock. The services were largely attended by relatives and acauaintances.
The aged man met his death while driving his car on State Road 5 just a short distance south of Shipshewana. Witnesses said that after unhooking a small trailer from his car, a 1924 Model T Ford, Mr. Hershberger attempted to make a U-turn across the pavement, apparantly intending to drive to Shipshewana, where he had lived since early spring. He drove directly in front of a car driven by Emmett E. Crist of Columbia City IN. The Hershberger car was demolished and the Crist car considerably damaged. A basal skull fracture caused Mr. Hershberger's death.
Mr. Crist suffered facial lacerations and a possible fracture of the nose, but Mrs. Crist was uninjured. Mrs. Crist is a sister of Mrs. Homer Egolf of Shipshewana.
Mr. Hershberger had retired from active farming and moved into Shipshewana from the farm south of there, where he had resided for nearly 35 years.
Surviving him are the widow, Susanna Miller Hershberger; whom he married January 29, 1895; three children, Mrs. Clarence (Anna) Miller, Goshen; Miss Dora Hershberger, a teacher in the Ligonier schools, and the one son, Thomas Hershberger, at home; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was the last of a family of 12 children. The accident was investigated by Deputy Coroner Dr. H.F. Flannigan and State Policeman Gaylord C. Howerton.

Funeral services for Eli Klingaman, 73, prominent member of the Scott IN community, were held at 2:00 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon from the Methodist Church at Scott. Rev. M.C. Morrow, church pastor, officiated and burial was made in the White Pigeon MI Cemetery.
Mr. Klingaman's death occured after nine weeks of serious illness. The last seven weeks were spent in the Constantine MI Hospital where he passed away late Saturday evening. Eli G. Klingaman was born in Middlebury Township, Elkhart County, on February 11, 1868. He was the son of Henry and Eliza Gallop Klingaman. Later he moved with his parents to LaGrange County.
On April 7, 1895, he was united in marriage to Lora E. Sixby at Scott. She, with a daughter Leta at home, and a son, Harlie of White Pigeon survives. Surviving also is a sister, Mrs. Josephine Davis of Indianapolis, and three grandchildren, Mrs. Cole M. Meese of Sturgis, and Robert and Joan Klingaman of White Pigeon, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. Three sisters and three brothers preceded him in death. Since mis marriage Mr.Klingaman had lived in or near Scott with the exception of two and one-half years spent at White Pigeon.
After farming a number of years he was employed 18 years by the Eddy Paper Corporation at White Pigeon.
