The Dearborn County Historical Society is asking for donations for an historic marker to honor one of the heroes of the Underground Railroad. To date, we have collected $365.00 |
Elijah Anderson was an African-American blacksmith who lived and worked in Lawrenceburg from about 1850 to 1854. He once told a friend that he had helped at least 1000 slaves escape to freedom, in all sorts of weather. |
Anderson left Lawrenceburg in 1854 in hopes of finding safety in Northern Ohio, but could not resist resuming his Underground Railroad activities. In 1859, he was arrested aboard a riverboat and charged in Kentucky with “slave stealing”. He died several years later in the Kentucky prison. |
The marker in his honor will be placed at the end of Walnut Street where there is an unobstructed view across the Ohio River to Kentucky. |
Please send your donations to Dearborn County Historical Society at 508 West High Street, Lawrenceburg, IN 47025-1916 and indicate that it is for the Elijah Anderson Marker. The local share of the marker cost is $800.00 |
