Dear Members,

Little did we realize in March that we would be entering an era that would so totally alter the way we live. The culprit is something we can only see because Science has advanced enough to magnify it. It is a pretty shape, sort of… Who could imagine the havoc it would bring!

Hundreds of thousands dead across the world, an economy in chaos, and people unable to return to the normal lives they had before this virus interrupted it.

We were touched in a personal way here at The Belgian Researchers, as our founder Micheline Gaudette’s husband succumbed to the illness in April. We offer our deepest sympathy to her and her family. A tree will be planted to remember Dr. George Gaudette.

The countries across the globe found it necessary to give "stay-at-home" orders to their populations trying to get a handle on the spread of a new very aggressive illness. This has given a lot of people time to turn back to their genealogical research. I am glad to report I have more material for Belgian Laces than I have room for in this issue! I love having that problem!

Many thanks to Chuck VanDenEeden, who again applied for a State Farm Good Neighbor grant. We are waiting to hear back. This helps us continue to pay for access to old newspapers where we pull obituaries and so much information that would otherwise not be recognized for what it is.

Many thanks to Dominique Van Renterghem and Guy Gallez for their continued interesting contributions.

I am attaching to this issue a pdf file from the Plantin-Moretus museum. Their site is very interesting and make me wish I could hop on a plane right now and go there.

As things begin to settle down around us and return to some form of normalcy, we would like to remind you we have census that could use your help indexing.

http://sites.rootsweb.com/~inbr/Census18801910.htm

You may ask why bother since the census are on so many databases. So allow me a minute to explain how companies like Ancestry uses robots to decipher many records and often make mistakes. Especially with foreign names. This makes a human review all the more important.

Contact one of us if this is something you would like to help with.

Not every state has the same guidelines but common sense tells us what we should do to protect ourselves and others. Staying home is a choice many of us make. Make sure to let us know how we can help make Belgian Laces more valuable to your research. Be safe out there!

Régine

Our principal objective is:
Keep the Belgian Heritage alive

2011/05/18 : WW1 drafts cards database, update from Linda Deppner note from Linda Deppner:
Esidor Joseph Scarnier
, age 36, b 12 Oct 1882, residence Virden IL, alien non-declarant, born in "Belgim," coal miner, nearest relative Lizzie Scarnier, Virden IL; reg date 12 Sep 1918 Macoupin Co IL.This card doesn't specify the birthplace, so that's probably why it wasn't included:
Gus Andrew Scarnier, age 33, b 18 Apr 1885, residence Worland, Bates Co MO, citizen by father's naturalization before registrant's majority, coal miner, nearest relative Lutie M. Scarnier, Worland; reg date 12 Sep 1918 Bates Co MO.
I've been able to locate the birth records for both of them and their sister in Chatelineau, Hainaut, so I know that neither of these birthdates is correct. But this is the way they stated it, so there it is. They came to the U.S. in 1895, after first settling inCanada where my grandfather and another brother were born.
