AZALIA, Settled in 1828, is a village containing 150 inhabitants, located in Sand Creek township, Bartholomew county, 10 miles south of Columbus, the county seat and banking town. Jonesville, 4 miles southwest on the J., M. & I. R. R. is the nearest rail approach. Grain and livestock are the exports.

BURNSVILLE, Established in 1830, is a post village of 78 inhabitants, located in Rock Creek township, Bartholomew county, 11 miles southeast of Columbus, the county seat and banking town. COLUMBUS, The county seat of Bartholomew county, is a flourishing incorporated city of 5,500 inhabitants, located on the main line of the J., M. & I. R. R., at its junction with the Madison and Rushville branches, 41 miles south of Indianapolis and 69 north of Louisville. It surrounded by probably the most fertile agricultural district in the State. Nearly the entire county is under a very high state of cultivation, and in the growth of wheat it has no superior in Indiana. Haw and Flat Rock creeks both empty into White river at or near the city. Columbus is a handsomely laid out city, noted for its excellent county buildings, substantial business blocks and handsome residences. It is lighted by gas, has good water works and a well organized fire department. The city supports 6 hotels, 2 banks, an opera house, several churches, 2 graded schools and 2 newspapers � Democrat and Republican � both are issued both daily and weekly. Its manufacturing interests, while not very numerous, are quite substantial and add greatly to the wealth of the city. They consist of 3 flour mills, carriage factory, 2 planing mills, 1 foundry, furniture factory, tannery, brewery, starch factory, hominy mills and stave and heading factory. The Adams Express and W. HOPE, This flourishing village of 1,000 inhabitants, is pleasantly located in Haw Creek township, Bartholomew county, 14 miles northeast of Columbus, the county seat. The village is entirely free from debt; has real and personal property amounting to $224,000, and is the location of the well known Moravian Seminary. It contains Methodist and Moravian churches, 1 graded school, 2 hotels, 2 flour mills, a planing mill, 1 drain tile factory, 1 brick yard and 2 saw mills. The Hope Independent represents the press at this point. It has daily stage communication with St. Louis Crossing, its shipping station, distant 5 miles, on R. Div. J., M. &I. WALESBOROUGH. An enterprising village of 250 inhabitants, situated on the J., M. & I. R. R., in Wayne township, Bartholomew county, 4j miles south of Columbus, the seat of justice and banking location. Methodist and Baptist churches and graded schools are maintained.
