AZALIA,
A post office in Bartholomew county, 9 miles south of Columbus, the county seat, 5 miles from the M. and I., Railroad, 3 miles from the Jeffersonville Railroad, 110 miles from Cincinnati, and 55 miles south of Indianapolis. It contains one Methodist church, two hotels, one minister, (Christian) one lawyer, one magistrate, one doctor, one grist mill, one general store, one grocery, one hide and leather store, one cabinet shop, four blacksmiths, two boot and shoe stores, four carpenters, two carriage shops, one harness shop, one watch and clock shop, one cooper, one tailor, one carding and spinning factory, and one school with an average attendance of 50 pupils. Population 100.

A post office of Bartholomew county.
COLUMBUS,
A post town and the seat of justice of Bartholomew county, situated on the East fork of White river, on the Indianapolis and Madison Railroad, Jeffersonville and Indianapolis Railroad, at the terminus of the Columbus and Shelbyville Railroad, and at the confluence of three streams called the Driftwood. Flat Rock and Hawcreek. This town was laid out in 1819 by Luke Bonesteel and John Lindsley, since which time extensive additions have been made on the north by George Roup, on the east by Irwin and Jones, and Sims and Finley. The location is high and beautiful, commanding a view of the valleys bordering each of the creeks. The court house is a tine building, erected at a cost of $8,500. There is being erected a large building for school purposes at an expense of $6,000. It has a very active trade, especially in grain, and the total estimate of its commercial transactions for 1857 amounted to one million of dollars. It contains some thirty-five to forty stores of various kinds, a bank, wagon and carriage
manufacturer, two newspapers, the "Republican" and "Indiana Democrat" one Masonic Lodge, one Lodge of Good Templars, with 150 members, one Lodge of Odd Fellows, one large furniture manufactory, employing about 40 hands, one vineyard under good cultivation, thriving, and one of the most productive in the State, eight churches, one Baptist, one Catholic, one Lutheran, one German Lutheran, one Methodist, one Presbyterian, one Campbellite and one Episcopal, and the usual number of professional men and mechanics. Distant, 41 miles south-east of Indianapolis. 45 miles north-east of Madison, 40 miles east of Bloomington, 80 miles west of Cincinnati, 27 miles from Greensburg, and 24 miles from Shelbyville. Population, 2,500.
