Pleasant Valley Cemetery

Listed below is the transcription of the tombstones in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Madison Township, Allen County, Indiana. The cemetery is located on the north side of Adair Road, between Emenhiser and Houck Roads. This cemetery is abandoned. This cemetery was a disgrace. There is nothing left of the original cemetery. The stones had been removed and placed in piles of other items removed from the cemetery and/or farm field. We attempted to read the cemetery in the spring but all of the overgrowth covered most of the area. You could see the foundations for the stones but the stones were no longer there. Only one stone was found. It is noted below as a stone broken. An attempt to read this cemetery will be made again in the winter when all of the growth has died. This cemetery was read in 1932 by the DAR. In the 1980s it was once again read by ACGSI. At that time they only found one stone. The wording in their reading for that stone was twas the only stone found in the trash pile. All of the following information is from the 1932 DAR reading except for one stone found in the 1980s by the ACGSI. The cemetery was photographed and transcribed in May of 2009. All stones in place at that time were included. If there is a photo of the tombstone, there will be a link after the name.

Second Update
This spring probing licensed by Indiana DNR was done at the cemetery. Stones for Alexander McConaughy and Margaret McConaughy were found. Photos have been added for them.
UPDATE
This cemetery has now been cleaned up and is being restored. The township trustee Troy MacDonald has done a wonderful job cleaning the cemetery. All of the concrete and tires and other garbage is gone. Stones for Isabel McConaughy and Catherine Barto were found under the garbage. Here are some photos of the cemetery as of Nov 12, 2013. A ceremony was held to dedicate the stone of James McConaughy a civil war soldier.

Indiana DNR Location Listing:
Quarter Sections 1/4, 1/4SE, 1/4NE, 1/4NW
Section 29, Twp 29N, Range 14E
Latitude 40.9455 Longitude 84.9729
Easting 970627 Northing 4534688

The listings are in alphabetical order. One surname is listed per stone. If a stone contained multiple people, the names on the stone are listed in order, from left to right. Information that pertains to a single individual is listed after their name. If the information pertains to multiple names, such as a marriage date, it is listed after all the names.

In some instances the stones were very worn and hard to read. The DAR did a reading in 1932 and the Allen County Genealogical Society did a reading in the 1980s. The information from these readings was used if the stones were unreadable or if the stones were not found.

There is no other information on any person other than what is listed. The photographs are copyrighted by the Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter, NSDAR and may not be copied or published in any way for profit. Copies of the photos may be printed for your personal use only. Please give the Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter, NSDAR credit when documenting where the transcriptions and photos were found.
