George W. Rader Post No. 119, Department of Indiana, G. A. R , was organized at Odd Fellows' Hall, Middletown, on Tuesday night, December 12, 1882, by Comrade Joseph P. Iliff, of Sol Meredith Post No. 55, Richmond, with the following charter members: John Baker, Samuel Barrett, Jonathan Brattain, Burton W. Castetter, Isaac N. Chenoweth, Enoch Craig, John Dutton, Joseph Dutton, Benjamin H. Davis, Theophilus Everett, Thomas J. Ginn, Joseph Graves, James Graham, Joseph G. Gustin, Abraham B. Hopper, David Jones, Peter Mackenzie, Josiah McCormack, Thomas Morton, William M. Moore, John A. Munnell, Flemmon W. Painter, Collier M. Reed, David Stewart, George W. Tarkleson, Frederick Tykle, Richmond Wisehart and Joseph A. Young.

Following is a complete roster of all who have been members of the Post (through 1887), with a short biographical sketch of each:

GEORGE W. RADER, for whom this Post was named, was born near Middletown, August 17, 1840. Enlisted in Company E, 8th Indiana Infantry, August 14, 1861, and upon its organization was appointed Sergeant. Served in all the campaigns and battles of the regiment up to and including the assault on Vicksburg, May 22, 1863, in which he lost a leg, and died from the effects of his wound May 27. He was buried on the field, and it is supposed that his remains now rest in the National Cemetery there. His age was 22 years, 9 months and 10 days.

Abshire, James T. — Born in Roanoke county, Virginia, June 3, 1844. Enlisted as private in Company F, 2d Indiana Cavalry, September 2, 1861. Captured at Newman, Ga., July 23, 1864, imprisoned at Andersonville and Florence; paroled Nov. 24, 1864. Mustered out in January, 1865. Was in battles at Shiloh, Chattanooga, Resacca, Big Shanty and Buzzard Roost. Served 41 months.

Alspaugh, Henry. — Born in Indiana in 1839. Enlisted in Company E, 9th Indiana Cavalry, January 8, 1864. Mustered out September 11, 1865. Was in the battle of Franklin, December 17, 1864. Served 19 months.

Baker, John. — Born in Tennessee as a slave in 1846. Enlisted as private in Company E, 1st Tennessee Heavy Artillery, U. S. C. T., April 1, 1864. Was in the battles of Bull's Gap, Dandridge, Sweet Water and Saulsbury. Mustered out as Corporal March 31, 1866. Served 21 months.

Barkdull, Philip. — Born in Indiana in 1835. Enlisted in Company I, 142nd Indiana Infantry, October 24, 1864, as private. Mustered out July 14, 1865. Served 9 months.

Barrett, Samuel. — Born in Indiana in 1842. Enlisted as private in Company B, 11sth Indiana Infantry, August 1, 1863. Mustered out March 4, 1864. Served 6 months.

Barrett, Philip. — Born in Ohio in 1838. Enlisted as private in Company I, 193d Ohio Infantry, February 1, 1865. Mustered out August 12, 1865. Served 6 months.

Bartow, John G. — Born in Madison county, Indiana, in 1844. Enlisted in Company G, 139th Indiana Infantry, as private, May 1, 1864, and mustered out in September, 1864 Re-enlisted in Company H, 147th Indiana Infantry, as private, in February, 1865, and was mustered out August 4, 1865. Served 11 months.

Bell, La Fayette. — Born in Campbell county, Kentucky, October 8, 1849. Enlisted as private in Company F, 53d Kentucky Infantry, October 1, 1864. Was in the battles incident to the raid on the salt works in western Virginia. Mustered out as Sergeant September 27, 1865. Served 12 months.

Bowers, Samuel. — Born in Henry county, Indiana, December 18, 1839. Enlisted as private in Company B, 130th Indiana Infantry, March 11, 1864, and was in the battles of the Atlanta campaign and at Kingston, N. C. Mustered out December 2, 1865. Served 21 months.

Brandon, George W. —Born in Delaware county, Indiana, in 1846. Enlisted as private in Company G, 7th Indiana Cavalry, August 21, 1863. Was in the battles of Okolona, Guntown, Verona and Egypt Station. Mustered out May 13, 1865. Served 21 months.

Brattain, Jonathan. — Born in Hamilton county, Indiana, February 4, 1844. Enlisted as private in Company E, 34th Indiana Infantry, October 10, 1861. Discharged January 5, 1863. Re-enlisted in same company and regiment in the spring of 1864. Mustered out February 3, 1866. Served 36 months.

Burton, Thomas T. — Born in Union county, Indiana, in 1837. Enlisted as private in Company E, 50th Indiana Infantry, October 4, 1861. Mustered out January 5, 1865. Served 39 months.

Campbell, John B. — Born in Virginia in 1845. Enlisted as private in the 4th Indiana Battery, August 24, 1863. Mustered out July 20, 1865. Was in the battles at Chicamauga, Lexington and Bentonville. Served 23 months.

Castetter, Burton W. — Born in Ohio in 1848. Enlisted in Company B, 48th Indiana Infantry, as private, March 16, 1864. Was in the battles of Nashville and Huntsville. Mustered out July 15, 1865. Served 16 months.

Chenoweth, Isaac N. — Born in Ohio in 1819. Enlisted in Company F, 124th Indiana Infantry, as Sergeant, December 23, 1863. Was in battles of Atlanta campaign, Franklin and Nashville, Tenn., and Wise's Forks, N. C. Mustered out as Sergeant August 31, 1865. Served 22 months.

Clevinger, Jonathan J. — Born in Delaware county, Indiana, in 1842. Enlisted as private in Company H, 134th Indiana Infantry, May 24, 1864. Mustered out Sept. 24, 1864. Served four months.

Clevinger, John R. — Born in Henry county, Indiana, in 1840. Enlisted in Company E, 8th Indiana Infantry, as private August 28, 1861; re-enlisted in the same organization as veteran, January 1, 1864. Was in battles of Cotton Plant, Ark., Austin, Port Gibson, Jackson, Champion Hills, Big Black River, Siege of Vicksburg and Siege of Jackson, Miss., Atchafalaya, La., Fort Esperanza, Tex., Opequan, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek, Va. Mustered out August 28, 1865. Served 48 months.

Conn, Adam E. — Born in Henry county, Indiana, in 1835. Enlisted in Company F, 57th Indiana Infantry as private, November 4, 1861. Discharged June 28, 1862; re-enlisted as Corporal in 25th Indiana Battery, October, 1864. Was in battles of Shiloh and Nashville, Tenn. Mustered out as Corporal July 20, 1865. Served 18 months.

Collins, Robert K. — Born in Indiana in 1832. Enlisted as private in Company B, 8th Indiana Infantry, April 16, 1861. Mustered out August 6, 1861; re-enlisted as Captain Company I, 69th Indiana Infantry in August, 1862. Was in battles of Rich Mountain, Va., Richmond, Ky., Port Gibson, Champion Hills, Big Black River, Siege of Vicksburg and Siege of Jackson, Miss. Mustered out January 5, 1865; entire loss of sight. Served 31 months.

Cooper, Imla W. — Born in Henry county, Indiana, in 1846. Enlisted as Sergeant in Company D, 147th Indiana Infantry, January 20, 1865. Mustered out as Sergeant August 4, 1865. Served 7 months.

Craig, Enoch. — Born in Indiana in 1840. Enlisted in Company E, 8th Indiana Infantry as private, May 20, 1864. Was in battles of Opequan, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek, Va. Mustered out August 28, 1865. Served 16 months.

Craig, Samuel. — Born in Indiana in 1843. Enlisted as private in Company E, 8th Indiana Infantry, August 14, 1861. Re-enlisted in same organization January 1, 1864. Was in battles at Cotton Plant, Ark., Austin, Port Gibson, Champion Hills, Jackson, Big Black River, siege of Vicksburg, and siege of Jackson, Miss., Atchafalaya, La., Fort Esperanza, Texas, and Opequan, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek, Va. Mustered out August 28, 1865, Served 49 months.

Crisher, Peter. — Born in Ohio in 184 1. Enlisted in Companv E, 8th Indiana Infantry, as private, May 13, 1864. Was in battles of Opequan, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek. Va. Mustered out August 28, 1865. Served 16 months.

Davis, Benjamin H. — Born in Fulton county, Indiana, September 26, 1846. Enlisted as private in Company C, 155th Indiana Infantry, February 28, 1865. Mustered out August 4, 1865. Served 6 months.

Diltz, James R. — Born in Preble county, Ohio, March 21, 1843. Enlisted as private in Company I, 44th Indiana Infantry, September 10, 1861. Was in battles of Fort Doneison, Shiloh, seige of Corinth, Perryville, Crab Orchard, Stone River and Chicamauga. Wounded in shoulder at Chicamauga. Mustered out November 28, 1864. Served 38 months.

Duttox, Joseph. — Born in Columbiana county, Ohio, November 8, 1837. Enlisted as Sergeant in Company H, 69th Indiana Infantry, August 8, 1862. Was in battles of Richmond, Ky., Chicasaw Bluffs, Miss., Arkansas Post, Ark., and Fort Blakely, Ala. Mustered out July 5, 1865. Served 36 months.

Button, John. — Born in Columbiana county, Ohio, in 1844. Enlisted in the 3d Ohio Independent Battery, as private, January 14, 1862. Was in the battle of Shiloh, Corinth, Iuka, Chicasaw Bluffs, Port Gibson, Raymond, Jackson, Champion Hills, Black River, siege of Jackson and siege of Vicksburg. Mustered out August 29, 1864. Served 31 months.

Eddleman, Richard J. — Born in Indiana in 1841. Enlisted in 12th Indiana Battery, as private, February 5, 1862. Discharged January 23, 1863. Served 12 months.

Ellingwood, Cyrus. — Born in Indiana in 1846. Enlisted as private in Company I, 39th Indiana Infantry (afterward 8th Cavalry), August 19, 1861. Was in battles of Shiloh, Chicamauga and Black River, N. C. Mustered out as Corporal (veteran enlistment), July 23, 1865, Served 47 months.

Everett, Theophilus. — Born at Wooster, Ohio, in 1806. Enlisted in Colonel Dodge's regiment of Dragoons when about twenty-five years old, and served on the frontiers about two years. Enlisted in Magruder's Battery in 1847 and served in the war with Mexico two years. Enlisted as Saddler in Company D, 2d Indiana Cavalry, November 28, 1861, and was discharged March 28, 1863; re-enlisted as private in Company K, 134th Indiana Infantry, in December, 1863. Was in the battles of Shiloh, Atlanta campaign, Franklin, Nashville and Wise's Forks. Mustered out August 28, 1865. Served in the war of the Rebellion 42 months^ total service, 7 years and 6 months,

Fleming, William R. — Born in Henry county, Indiana, in 1839. Enlisted in Company E, 8th Indiana Infantry, August 20, 1861, as private. Was in battles of Cotton Plant, Ark., Austin, Port Gibson, Jackson, Champion Hill, Big Black River, siege of Vicksburg, siege of Jackson, Miss., Atchafalaya, La., and Fort Esperanza, Texas. Mustered out September 4, 1864. Served 36 months.

Fleming, Andrew J. — Born in Henry county, Indiana, July 14, 1842. Enlisted in Company E, 8th Indiana Infantry, August 20, 1861. Was in the battles of Cotton Plant, Ark., Austin, Port Gibson, Jackson, Champion Hills, Big Black River, siege of Vicksburg, siege of Jackson, Miss, Atchafalaya, La., and Fort Esperanza, Texas. Mustered out September 4, 1864. Served 36 months.

Gardner, William M. — Born in Indiana in 1848. Enlisted in Company G, 69th Indiana Infantry, as private, September 27, 1864. Was in siege of Mobile, Ala. Mustered out July 5, 1865. Served 9 months.

Gibson, John. — Born in White county, Indiana, September 11, 1845. Enlisted as private in Company K, 12th Indiana Cavalry, December 12, 1863. Was in battles of Murfreesboro, Huntsville, Stevenson and Gurley's Tank. Mustered out June 17, 1865. Served 18 months.

Ginn, Thomas J.— Born in Campbell county, Ky., August 17, 1833, Enlisted in Company F, 57th Indiana Infantry, November 9, 1861. Was in battles of Shiloh, Perryville, Stone River and Franklin. Was captured at Franklin and imprisoned at Andersonville; exchanged, and was on the steamer Sultana at the time of the explosion. Mustered out May 19, 1865. Served 42 months.

Ginn, Jonathan T. — Born in Indiana in 1849. Enlisted in Company H, 140th Indiana Infantry, September 20, 1864. Was in the battles of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Fort Anderson, Fort Fisher and Town Creek, N. C. Mustered out June 1, 1865. Served 8 months.

Ginn, Job B. — Born in Henry county, Indiana, April 26, 1839. Enlisted in Company E, 8th Indiana Infantry, August 20, 1861; re-enlisted as veteran, January 1, 1864. Was in battles of Cotton Plant, Ark., Austin, Port Gibson, Jackson, Champion Hills, Big- Black River, siege of Vicksburg, siege of Jackson, Atchafalava, Fort Esperanza, Opequan, Fishers Hill and Cedar Creek. Mustered out August 28, 1865. Served 48 months.

Gossett, Richard S. — Born in Henry county, Indiana, in 1841. Enlisted in Company G, 17th Indiana Infantry, June 12, 1861; re-enlisted as veteran January 1, 1864. Was in battles of Chatahoochie River, Chicamauga, Corinth, Ebenezer Church, Elkwater (Va.), Farmington, Green Briar (Va.), Hoover's Gap, Kenesaw Mountain, Macon, Marietta, New Hope Church, Rome and Selma. Mustered out as Corporal August 8, 1865. Served 50 months.

Graham, James. — Born in Union county, Indiana, in 1821. Enlisted in Company H, 69th Indiana Infantry, August 15, 1862. Was in the battle of Richmond, Ky. Discharged December 1, 1862. Served 4 months.

Graves, Joseph — Born in Henry county, Indiana, in 1839. Enlisted in Company H, 69th Indiana Infantry, August S, 1862. Was in the battles of Richmond, Chicasaw Bluffs, Arkansas Post, Port Gibson, Champion Hills, Big Black River, siege of Vicksburg, siege of Jackson, and seige of Mobile, Mustered out July 5, 1863, as Corporal. Was slightly wounded at Champion Hills. Served 36 months.

Griffith, William. — Born in Henry county, Indiana, in 1841. Enlisted in Company E, 40th Indiana Infantry 7 , October 10, 1864. Was in the battles of Franklin and Nashville. Mustered out October 20, 1865. Served 12 months.

Grove, Isaac. — Born in Pennsylvania in 1827. Enlisted in Company K, 8th Indiana Infantry, as Musician, April 17, 1861. Mustered out August 6, 1861. Re-enlisted in Company H, 69th Indiana Infantry, as Musician, in August, 1862. Discharged March 5, 1863; re-enlisted as Musician in Company F, 124th Indiana Infantry, in November, 1863. Was in the battles of Rich Mountain, Richmond. Arkansas Post and the Atlanta campaign. Discharged April 10, 1865. Served 28 months.

Gustin, Joseph G.— Born in Madison county, Indiana, in 1846. Enlisted in Company H, 140th Indiana Infantry, September 3. 1864. Was in the battles of Murfreesboro, Term., Fort Anderson, Fort Fisher and Town Creek Bridge, N. C. Mustered out July 12, 1865, Served 10 months.

Hanby, Elisha M. — Born in Indiana in 1845. Enlisted in Company F, 53d Indiana Infantry, in March, 1865. Mustered out in July, 1865. Served 4 months.

Higley, Henry W. — Born in Michigan in 1837. Enlisted as Veterinary Surgeon in Company G, 3d Missouri Cavalry, October 2, 1861. Wounded in head at Prairie D'Ann, Ark. Mustered out November 11, 1864. Served 37 months.

Hodson, John. — Born in Indiana in 1834. Enlisted in Company E, 8th Indiana Infantry, August 20, 1861. Was in the battles of Port Gibson, Jackson, Champion Hills, Big Black River and siege of Vicksburg. Discharged April 1, 1864. Served 31 months.

Holsinger, Jacob. — Born in Pennsylvania in 1825. Enlisted as Sergeant in Company G, 110th Ohio Infantry, August 22, 1862, and served in the Army of the Potomac and was in the great battles fought by that organization. Mustered out as 1st Sergeant June 20, 1865. Served 34 months.

Hopper, Abram B. — Born at Mt. Healthy, Ohio, December 24, 1843. Enlisted in Company G, 39th Ohio Infantry, July 31, 1861. Was in the battles at New Madrid, Farmington, Iuka, Corinth, Parker's Cross Roads, Decatur, Resacca, Kenesaw Mountain and Nickojack Creek. Was wounded in the foot at Nickojack Creek, July 4, 1864. Mustered out August 12, 1864. Served 36 months.

Hunt, Herbert. — Born in Indiana in 1847. Enlisted in Company C, 57th Indiana Infantry, March 9, 1864. Served in the Atlanta campaign and in the battles of Franklin and Nashville. Mustered out May 29, 1865. Served 15 months.

Hurst, Joseph. — Born in Indiana in 1847. Enlisted in Company G, 17th Indiana Infantry, March 9, 1864. and was in the battles of Pumpkinvine Creek, Big Shanty, Belle Plain Road, Kenesaw, Marietta, Chattahoochee River, Stone Mountain. Flat Rock, New Hope Church, Rome, Ebenezer Church, Selma and Macon. Mustered out August 8, 1865. Served 19 months.

Jacobs, Henry. — Born in Pennsylvania in 1820. Enlisted in Company A, 91st Ohio Infantry, August 11, 1862. Mustered out June 24, 1865. Served 35 months.

Jennings, George W. — Born in Frankford, Ky., in 1820. Enlisted in Company K, 16th Indiana Infantry, July 12, 1862. Was in the battles of Richmond, Ky., Arkansas Post, Big Black River, siege of Vicksburg, siege of Jackson, Port Gibson, Chicasaw Bayou and Sabine Cross Roads, La. Mustered out as Corporal June 30, 1865. Served 36 months.

Jester, Gary. — Born in Ohio in 1839. Enlisted in Company E, 8th Indiana Infantry, August 14, 1861; re-enlisted as veteran in same organization, January 1, 1864. Was in the battles of Cotton Plant, Austin, Port Gibson, Jackson, Champion Hills, Big Black River, siege of Vicksburg. siege of Jackson, Miss., Atchafalava, La., Fort Esperanza, Texas, Opequan, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek, Va. Mustered out August 28, 1865. Served 48 months.

John, Steven. — Born in Indiana in 1848. Enlisted in Company L, 8th Indiana Cavalry, February 20, 1864. Mustered out September 12, 1865. Served in the Atlanta campaign, and the march to the sea. Served 17 months; also served 5 years in the Regular Army since the war. Total service 6 years and 5 months.

Jones, David. — Born in Augusta county, Virginia, September 9, 1839. Enlisted as Corporal in Company F, 124th Indiana Infantry, December 31, 1863; transferred to V. R. C, Mustered out August 28, 1865. Served 20 months.

LaBoyteaux, Richard J. — Born in Indiana in 1839. Enlisted in Company H, 69th Indiana Infantry. August 6, 1862. Was in the battles of Richmond, Ky., siege of Vicksburg, siege of Jackson, and siege of Mobile, Ala. Mustered out July 5, 1865. Served 36 months.

Latchaw, William. — Born in Indiana in 1843. Enlisted in Company D, 87th Indiana Infantry, December 29, 1863. Mustered out January 31, 1865. Served 12 months.

Leavens, Alfred D. W.. — Born in Erie county, Pennsylvania, April 18, 1841. Enlisted in Company K, 8th Illinois Cavalry, October 10, 1862. Was in the battles of Gettysburg, Carnifax Ferry, Brandy Station and Loudon Heights. Was in the search for Booth after the assassination of President Lincoln, in April, 1865, in the swamps of Maryland, and helped arrest the man that rowed Booth and Harrold across the Potomac River in less than an hour after crossing. Was at Dr. Mudd's house and saw the boot that was cut off of Booth's foot when Dr. Mudd dressed his broken leg. Mustered out July 17, 1865. Served 33 months

Lewis, Thomas N.— Born in Hamilton county, Ohio, April 9, 1818. Enlisted in Company A, 36th Indiana Infantry, January 3, 1864. Was in the battles of the Atlanta campaign, Franklin and Nashville Wounded in face at Kennesaw, and in the leg at Atlanta. Mustered out November 25, 1865. Served 23 months.

Little, Gambral. - Born in Madison county, Indiana, in 1833. Enlisted in Company B, 130th Indiana Infantry, January 1, 1864. Was in the battles of the Atlanta campaign, Nashville and Wise's Forks. Wounded in leg at Nashville. Mustered out December 2, 1865. Served 23 months.

Mackenzie, Peter — Born in Adams county. Ohio, November 16, 1834. Enlisted in Company E,9 1st Ohio Infantry, August 6, 1862. Dis- charged March 30, 1863. Served 8 months.

May, Jonathan. — Born in Virginia in 1843. Enlisted in Company E, 8th Indiana Infantry, August 14, 1861; re-enlisted in same company as veteran, January 1, 1864. Was in the battles of Cotton Plant, Ark, Austin, Port Gibson, Jackson, Champion Hills, Black River, siege of Vicksburg, siege of Jackson, Miss., Atchafalaya, La., Fort Esperanza, Texas. Opequan, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek, Va. Mustered out August 28, 1865. Served 49 months.

McConnell, Joseph P. — Born in Ohio in 1846. Enlisted in Company E, 9th Indiana Cavalry, October 31, 1863. Was accidentally wounded in the right arm at Nashville, Tenn., May 4, 1864, requiring amputation. Discharged April 15, 1865. Served 18 months.

McCormack, Josiah. — Born in Virginia in 1826. Enlisted in Company E, 9th Indiana Cavalry, December 28, 1863 Mustered out April 16, 1865. Served 16 months.

McCormack, Andrew. — Born in Indiana in 1837. Enlisted in Company E, 9th Cavalry, December 24, 1863. Captured during Hood's Nashville campaign and imprisoned at Andersonville; exchanged in March, 1864. Was on the steamer Sultana at the time of the explosion. Mustered out September 11, 1865. Served 20 months.

McGuire, Amos — Born in Indiana in 1841. Enlisted in Company B, 12th Indiana Infantry, April 17, 1861. Mustered out May 19, 1862 Served 13 months.

Miller, David T. — Born in New York in 1846. Enlisted in Company I, 9th New Jersey Infantry, December 1, 1862. Wounded in chin at Petersburg, Va. Mustered out August 5, 1865. Served 32 months.

Mills, Samuel. — Born in Virginia in 1831. Enlisted in Company H, 140th Indiana Infantry, September 23. 1864. Was in battles at Murfreesboro, Tenn., Fort Anderson, Fort Fisher, and Town Creek, N. C. Mustered out May 20, 1865. Served S months.

Minnick, Andrew J. — Born in Indiana in 1840. Enlisted in Company H, 69th Indiana Infantry, August 19, 1862, as Corporal. Was in the battles of Richmond, Ky., Chicasaw Bluffs, Arkansas Post, Port Gibson, Champion Hills, Big Black River, siege of Vicksburg, siege of Jackson and siege of Mobile. Mustered out July 5, 1865. Served 36 months.

Mitchell, Samuel. — Born in Indiana in 1835. Enlisted as private in Company E, 8th Indiana Infantry, September 4, 1861. Appointed Sergeant and promoted 2d Lieutenant January 9, 1863. Was in battles at Cotton Plant, Austin, Port Gibson, Jackson, Champion Hills, Big Black River and siege of Vicksburg. Resigned February 28, 1864. Served 30 months.

Moore, William M. — Born in Pennsylvania in 1846. Enlisted in Company F, 124th Indiana Infantry, November 18, 1863. Appointed 1st Sergeant and promoted 2d Lieutenant. Was in the battles of Atlanta campaign, Franklin, Nashville and Wise's Forks. Mustered out August 31, 1865. Served 23 months.

Moore, Abraham. — Born in Ohio in 1843. Enlisted in Company B, 2d Indiana Cavalry, September 20, 1861. Mustered out October 4, 1864. Served 36 months.

Morton, Thomas. — Born in Preble county, Ohio, August 15, 1826. Enlisted in Captain Hawkins' company of Ohio Volunteers for the Mexican war, in May, 1846. The company was not accepted, and the men were mustered out in June, 1846; re-enlisted in March, 1847, in Company F, U. S. Mounted Rifles.
