QRYTEXT: William Andrew CLEVENGER was a bigamist. He was
married to Nancy Ann THOMPSON in Wayne county, IL in 1857 and
then married in White county, IL, my ancestor , the widow Nancy
Jane WILLIAMSON, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (STEERMAN)
SINNETT. Now my William Andrew CLEVENGER was not your ordinary
bigamist--- no-- it looks like he cohabitated with both women
for a period of two years-- finally leaving wife number one in
lieu of my ancestor. Needless to say Nancy Jane THOMPSON was not
a happy camper, and filed for divorce when she finally caught
wind of his second marriage. They were divorced in 1869. However
in the 1870 census-- she still shows him as the head of
household-- and he is also the head of the house in White County
too. Now comes the part of his death-- that really has me
befuddled-According to Nancy Jane SINNETT WILLIAMSON CLEVENGER'S
widows pension records William Andrew CLEVENGER died in
Springerton, White County, IL around the last day of the month
of September, surrounded by his brother- in law and his sister
in law, Henry SENATE and Tabitha EVANS. They state in their
affadavits that they knew that he was not in the war-- since
they had known him for years before he was married to their
sister. Tell me-- if you knew a man for years, wouldn't you know
that he had another wife stashed away. I can find nothing about
his burial or his estate. Can some one from White County,
Springerton area help me in finding this very enigmatic
ancestor, who needs to be awarded some kind of metal for
originality.
Thanks, candee
