GAY, JAMES

One of the Oldest Illinois Settlers Dies in Pike

James GAY was born in North Carolina in the days when Pike County, as well as Adams County, was a part of the great northwest territory, and when the country was engaged in a war with England. As a young man he came west and settled near what is now Summer Hill, Pike County, Illinois. There he continued to reside up to the time of his death. He was married there, and there some years ago his good wife died.
Five children and a number of grandchildren survive. The children are Mrs. James ALLEN, Mrs. Pet BROWN, Charles GAY, Al GAY and Will GAY. All of them are residing in Pike County, and nearly all of them near the old homestead, which has become famous through the long residence of the old settler.
The date of the funeral had not been settled when the news of his death reached Quincy yesterday, but the relatives were of the opinion that it would be Thursday afternoon.
