PIKE SHERIFF IN TROUBLE - AHGP

MARSHAL CHENOWETH ARRESTED

Quincy Daily Journal - Thursday, July 02, 1908 - Pg: 7

CITY MARSHAL IS IN TROUBLE - A MAN HE ARRESTED GETS OUT A WARRANT FOR HIM - NEW CANTON, PIKE COUNTY, ILLINOIS - People are Divided in the Matter

The city marshal of New Canton is in trouble, and the affair has caused considerable talk in that section, says the Barry Adage. He has the reputation of not being afraid to do his duty and seems to be the right kind of an officer, but the people of New Canton seem to think he went to far in this particular case.

Marshal Chenoweth arrested a man named Palmer a couple of weeks ago, and the latter in some way got away from the officer by being a fast runner. When the marshal realized that Palmer would get away he pulled his revolver and sent a few bullets after him, but it did no good. A week later Palmer was again arrested by the marshal while in one of the saloons. The trial that followed resulted in favor of Palmer, on the ground that the city marshal had no right to enter the saloon and make the arrest without being called for by the owner of the place.

The next step taken by Palmer was to swear out a state's warrant for the arrest of Marshal Chenoweth, charging him with an assault to do bodily harm, and that case will go before the grand jury. It is also reported that Palmer has threatened to bring action for damages against the city.

The whole affair seems to be an attempt to have Chenoweth put out of office, and it is claimed that the saloonkeepers are behind Palmer.
