PROMINENT CITIZEN CALLED BY DEATH
JOHN E. TICE PASSED AWAY FRIDAY AFTERNOON
DEMISE NOT UNEXPECTED
Was a Man of Fine Character, of Charitable Impulses and Possessed Many Friends

The Index has the unpleasant duty of recording again this week the death of one of the town's foremost and leading citizens, John E. Tice, which occurred Friday afternoon shortly before 2 o'clock. For several years Mr. Tice has been in declining health and the two weeks prior to death were filled with intense suffering. The funeral service was held at the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at two o'clock and was conducted by Rev. Fred Nazarene of Wyanet, assisted by Rev. N. R. Hinds of Plano and Rev. H. P. Barnes, present pastor of the church, the two former having served as pastors of the church in years past. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Tice was a man of fine character, a man of charitable impulse and faithful in the discharge of every duty. He was of a genial disposition and made warm friends. As a husband, father and citizen, he leaves a record that is above reproach. John Edgar Tice was born at Haldane, Ill., Dec. 19, 1856, and died at Mt. Morris, Ill., Nov. 17, 1916, aged 59 years, 10 months and 28 days. He was the second son of Frank N. Tice and Catherine E. Felker. Mr. Tice spent his early childhood on the farm in the vicinity Forreston, Ill. At the age of 17 his family moved to Forreston, where he entered the High School. While living in Forreston he joined the Methodist church at the age of 19 years, at the time of a wonderful revival meeting held at that place. A few years later the removed to Mount Morris, and on Sept. 13, 1881, Mr. Tice was united in marriage to Laura M. Stonebraker. The remaining years of his life were spent on his farm north of town and in the village where he engaged in business pursuits, and later, as his health failed, in bearing patiently the pain and suffering that preceded his death. He is survived by his faithful and devoted wife, and two children, Charles E. Tice and Mrs. Jesse Q. Allen, both of whom are residents of Mount Morris, who during his long and painful illness, have given him the most tender care, and who deeply deplore the loss of and unusually loving and considerate husband and father. He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, C.F. Tice and Frank A. Tice of Mount Morris, Mrs. O.W. Shaw of Pine Creek and Mrs. Edwin D. Peifer of Mount Morris, who together with his aged and infirm mother, most sincerely mourn the death of this dutiful son and loving brother. Mr. Tice, until poor health forbade attendance, was prominent and active as a member of the M. E. Church, and the membership painfully realize that the mane of a zealous Christian worker has been stricken by a higher degree from the church rolls. The publishers of the Index especially deplore the passing of Mr. Tice, as he has been a stockholder in the company for a long time and since 1908 a member of the board of directors, in whose deliberations his sound business judgement was of great value. Mr. Tice also served efficiently in years past on the Mount Morris Board of Education and as member of the village Board of Trustees.
