Ellen Barbara (Eyster) Chaney (1838-1903) Obituary

Obituary:
"September 26, 1834--; Death came to Mrs. Ellen Barbara Chaney at her farm home in Marion Township on Friday night last, at the close of several years of failing health. Ellen Barbara Eyster, eldest daughter of Benjamin and Katherine Eyster was born in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, September 26, 1834, and at the age of twelve years came to Ogle County with her parents who settled in White Rock Township. Her marriage to Eli M. Chaney, one of the pioneer residents of Ogle County, occurred on February 12, 1856. To this union were born three children, all of whom survive; Emma the eldest, is the wife of Jerome L. Burroughs of Rockford; a son, John B. Chaney, for many years managed the home farm, but is now a resident of Portland, Oregon, and the youngest member of the family, Miss Ella B. Chaney, has remained at the old home, the constant companion of her aged mother, and ministered to her wants to the best of her ability during the many years of failing health, which is also true of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Burroughs of this city, who were always ready and willing to do for her, whatever they could. Besides the three children, as noted above, Mrs. Chaney is survived by one brother, A. B. Eyster, a resident of Rockford, and two grandsons, Guy C. Burroughs and Harry L. Chaney. The husband and father passed away in 1897. Mrs. Chaney was possessed of a bright mind. Early in life she attained a good education and was one of the successful pioneer teachers of Ogle County. At an early age she became affiliated with the Baptist Church and continued in that faith until the end. Funeral services largely attended by sorrowing relatives and friends were held from the late home Tuesday afternoon, Rev. George Milne of the Stillman Valley Congregational Church having the service in Charge. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot at Paynes Point cemetery."
