Darwin H. Campbell (1845-1887) Obituary

Darwin H. Campbell died at Byron, Ill., January 13, 1887. Born in Byron, June 3, 1845. Deceased has been a useful citizen, a long time prominent in business and always identified with the business prosperity of his native town. In his early business career he was engaged in general merchandise, having succeeded his father, Anning O. Campbell, Esq. who survives him.

In 1882 he sold out his mercantile business to F. A. Nott, and since July, 1885 has been postmaster and banker in Byron. He received his education in the schools of Byron and at Eastman’s Business College in Chicago.

He was married to Florence A., daughter of Frederick A. Wheelock and Nora S. (Spoor) Wheelock, May 15, 1884. His wife survives him.
In the death of Mr. Campbell this community has sustained an irreparable loss, both in a social and business point of view. He was a man of strict integrity and of reliability, and it is safe to say that he had not an enemy in the world.

A deep feeling of gloom pervades on all hands, and nearly all the business houses were draped in mourning. Deceased had long been a sufferer from varicose veins in the right lower limb, which was the cause of his death. Aside from that affliction he was remarkably vigorous, strong and healthy.

The funeral in the Congregational Church Saturday was attended by as large a number of people as ever assembled in the church. The remains were interred in Byron Cemetery.
