Monroe County, Illinois Pioneer Certificates

Early Pioneer Certificate (Prior to county formation in 1816)
Early Settler Certificate (1816 to 1850)
County Settler Certificate (1851-1875)

 

 

The Monroe County Pioneer Certificate is a project of the Monroe County Genealogical Society. Any one who has an ancestor who lived in Monroe County, Illinois before 1876 can apply. Proof of each individualís descent from the previous generation must accompany the application. Acceptable sources are marriage, birth and death records, obituaries and Bible pages which list the individual and his or her parents. Proof that the individual lived in Monroe County, Illinois in the year stated on the application must also be provided. Acceptable sources are land and census records, Bible pages, obituaries and copies of pages from county or state histories. When accepted, the application and sources of proof will be filed at the Morrison-Talbott Library in Waterloo for patronsí use.

Applicants must complete the attached application and send it to M.C.G.S., County Pioneer Project, P.O. Box 381, Columbia, IL 62239, along with a $10 application fee for each ancestor and documentation proving descent from the pioneer. If approved, they will receive an attractive certificate suitable for framing. 

The Early Pioneer Certificate will be on heavy gray marbled card stock with a gold seal embossed with the M.C.G.S. seal and a red ribbon affixed to the bottom of the certificate. The Early Settler Certificate will be on gray marbled card stock with a gold seal embossed with the M.C.G.S. seal affixed to the bottom of the certificate. The County Settler Certificate will be on white card stock with the MCGS seal embossed at the bottom of the certificate.
