MRS. PHELAN, 80, OF ILLIOPOLIS IS DEAD

Illiopolis, Jan. 1 - Mrs. Catherine Phelan died at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. She was 80 years old. Mrs. Phelan was born in County Clare, Ireland in 1836 and went to Canada when a young girl. She was married to Michael Phelan in Guph, Canada in 1859. The couple came to Illiopolis in 1880 and settled near Illiopolis. Her husband died in 1906.

Mrs. Phelan is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Patrick Loftis of Niantic, Mrs. Michael Daly of Illiopolis, Mrs. W. H. Smith of Decatur, Mrs. George Garecht of Illiopolis and Mrs. Theresa McDermott of Stockton, Ohio; two sons, Gus and James Phelan of Lincoln, Ill., thirty-eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The body was brought to Illiopolis at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

The funeral services will be held at the residence at 9:30 o'clock Tuesday morning and at 10 O'clock at the Catholic Church here, Father J. C. Daw officiating. Burial will be in Clavary cemetery at Illiopolis.

Long Time Resident of this city succumbs - Remains sent to Illiopolis

PHELAN - Died, at 2:30 o'clock Sunday morning, Dec 31, 1916 at St. John's Hospital, MRS. CATHERINE PHELAN, aged 80 years.

Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning at the Catholic Church at Illiopolis, Rev. Father Daws officiating.

Interment will be made in Calvary Cemetery at Illiopolis.

The remains were sent yesterday to Illiopolis by the M. J. McCabe undertaking establishment, where funeral services and interment will take place at an hour to be announced later.

The decedent was born in County Clare, Ireland and went to Canada when a young girl. She was married to MICHAEL PHELAN in Canada and came to this county in 1880 with him, settling in Illiopolis. Her husband died in 1904.

She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. PAT LOFTUS, Niantic; Mrs. MIKE DAILY, Illiopolis; Mrs. W. H. SMITH, Decatur; Mrs. George GARECHT, Illiopolis and Mrs. Messia McDERMOTT, Schocktan, OH and two sons, AUGUSTUS and JAMES PHELAN of Lincoln, Ill.

(Obit - Newpaper not known) AGED WOMAN DIES Mrs. Catherine Phelan Passes Away After Long Suffering

After long but patient suffering Mrs. Catherine Elizabeth Phelan of Illiopolis died at St. John's Hospital in Springfield at 2:30 oclock Sunday morning, succumbing to a complication of diseases. She had been failing in health since May and had been confined to her bed most of the time for the past six months. She had been a patient at the hospital since December 5. The decedent whose maiden name was Davis, was born in County Clare, Ireland, in 1836. She migrated to Canada when a young girl and was married to Michael Phelan at Duph in that country in 1859. They came to Illinois in 1883 and settled on a farm between Lanesville and Buffalo Hart. Afterwards they resided for seventeen years on a farm one mile north of Niantic, where Mr. Phelan died on March 14, 1906. In the fall of that year the widow moved to Illiopolis, where she had made her home ever since. Mrs. Phelan was the mother of ten daughters and three sons, of whom five daughters and two sons survive. The daughters still living are Mrs. Pat Lofus of near Niantic, Mrs. Micahel Daly of near Illiopolis, Mrs. W. H. Smith of Decatur, Mrs. George W. Garecht of Illiopolis and Mrs. Timothy McDermott of Cosochton, O. The surviving sons are Gus and James Phelan, both of Lincoln. The decedent also leaves thirty-eight grandchidren and seven greatgrandchildren. A grandaughter, Miss Theresa Tedrow, made her home with Mrs. Phelan.

The decedent had always been a member of the Catholic church. She also belonged to the Purgatorial Co-fraternity and the League of the Sacred Heart, both of Coshocton, O.

The remains were brought to the decedent's home in Illiopolis on Sunday afternoon, and funeral services were held at the Church of the Visitation at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning, being conducted by the rector, Rev. J. C. Daw. The pallbearers were six grandsons of Mrs. Phelan - Joseph and Ernest Loftus of Niantic, William and Raymond Daly of Illiopolis, Bert Smith of Decatur and James Phelan of Lincoln. Interment took place at Calvary cemetery. The person from a distance present at the funeral included: Pat Loftus and family, Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Connor, Mr. and Mrs. James Muldoon, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Mooney, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Roberts, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Leonard, Mrs. Louis Seelig and daughter, Miss Kathryn and Gus Loftus of Niantic; Gus Phelan and family, James Phelan and family, Mr. and Mrs. Lafe Schultz and Mrs. Carl Dumser of Lincoln; W. H. Smith and family, Mrs. John Overly and Mrs. William Young, of Decatur; James and Miss Mary Murphy, Mrs. Thomas Call and Miss Bid Dwyer of Buffalo; Mr. and Mrs. James Hanlon of Pawnee; Mrs. Timothy McDermott , of Cosochton, O.; Miss Katherine Creamer of Assumption, and Miss Mary Dawson of Springfield.
