Decatur (IL) Herald Despatch, 18 Oct 1890:
MRS. JOHN NELSON
Several Runaways at a Funeral
Returning from the funeral of Mrs. John Nelson, near Illiopolis, at l o'clock p.m. Sunday, several teams of horses became fightened and ran away. A team driven by Hugh Irwin, of Niantic started the trouble by running into a barbed wire fence, then jumping into a ditch and overturning the wagon to which they were hitched. This started several other teams and a dozen runaways seemed imminent. Nine teams in all were going along at a runaway gait. Mrs. Thomas Wright, of Niantic, was thrown out of a wagon and was hurt on the head. A daugher of John Gleason, of Illiopolis, was injured because a horse from behind got its fore feet into the wagon in which she was riding, and repeatedly struck her. Green Simpson, of Illiopolis, had his arm broken and many others were injured.
