The Niantic Observer, 11 Jan. 1918:

RITES HELD FOR JAMES HAGEN

Funeral services for James J. Hagen, who had passed away at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Hagen, in Illiopolis last Friday morning, were held at the Church of the Visitation at 10 o'clock Monday morning, Rev. J. C. Daw, the rector, officiating. A large number of sorrowing relatives and friends were present. Interment was made at Calvary cemetery. The Decatur council of the Knights of Columbus, of which the decedent was a member, had arranged to attend the funeral in a body but Illinois Traction system cars were so late that a realization of this plan was prevented.

The pallbearers were John W. E. Nelson, T. P . Creamer, T. J. Kirby, Lee T. Neff, John D. Graham and Charles C. Scott.

In addition to the relatives and friends present from Springfield and Niantic the persons from a distance in attendance included: Thomas and Edward Hayes and Miss Margaret Hayes of East St. Louis; J. C. Conley of Petersburg; Larry and Pat Doyle and Pat and Thomas Ryan of Stonington; Richard Doyle of Taylorville; Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Delaney of Chatsworth; Mr. and Mrs. Pat Delaney, Miss Margaret Delaney, Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Rodems, Mr. and Mrs. James J. Carrel and daughter, Miss Mary, Mrs. Anna Hayes and Misses Rena Reddington, Beatrice Fagen and Anna McShane of Decatur; Mrs. B. Delaney and family of Warrensburg; Mr. and Mrs. Con O'Laughlin and daughter, Miss Margaret, and Miss Mary Goley of Cornland; Simeon Keck of Buffalo; Leo Connaghan of Camp Dodge, Ia.; Charles Connaghan of Havana; and Mrs. Balcolm C. Baldridge of near Virden.

Upon receiving word of Mr. Hagen's death Dean W. B. Craig of the Indiana Veterinary college at Indianapolis, at which the decedent was a student, sent two of the young man's classmates, L. J. Etnire and John Crosby, to represent that institution at the funeral. They informed Mr. Hagen's parents that he had enlisted in the veterinary corps of the United States Army two weeks previously. Out of respect to the decedent the college was closed from last Friday till after the funeral.

Card of Thanks We desire to express our heartfelt thanks to our neighbors and friends for the great kindness and sympathy shown us during the illness and at the time of the death of our beloved son and brother. (Signed) John A. Hagen and Family
