Seymour was the oldest son of William and Elizabeth (Blackwell) Seymour. He was a member of Co. H, 101st Illinois Infantry and marched with Sherman to the Sea. After the Civil War, John returned to farming in Morgan County, Illinois. He married Melissa Ann McNeely on 27 Nov 1851 near Scottville, Illinois.
