NATHAN MARTIN

This photograph is of my father, Nathan Martin, taken around 1900. He was born in Petersburg, Menard Co., IL on December 4, 1880 to John A. & Rachel (Kinney) Martin. In 1884, after the death of his mother, and because his father was in ill health he and his two older brothers, Tom & Cal, were sent to the Soldier's & Sailors orphanage in Normal, IL. The orphanage was set up for the children of Civil War veterans. Nathan returned to his father in 1890 and attended Smoot School. He later moved to Oakland, Iowa with his brother Tom. During WWI he served in the Canadian Army and suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was gassed, causing him to lose his sense of smell. After his discharge he married Henrietta Mae Hinson, 20 years his junior, in Edmonton, Canada on 1 June 1919. Their 1st child was born in Canada. They returned to Iowa where 3 more children were born. They then settled in Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois where 7 more children were born. I am the youngest of those 11 children. Nathan died 14 Sept 1955 and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin, IL.
