Mrs. Anna Maria Tholen passed away at 3 o'clock Sunday morning at her home, 1340 West Lafayette avenue Jacksonville, after a lingering illness. Had she lived until the 24th of the present month she would have been 91 years old.
Mrs. Tholen was well known in Bluffs, having visited here frequently. Some time ago she had the misfortune to fall and break her hip, from which she never recovered.
The aged woman was born at Hanover, Germany, June 24, 1836, the daughter of John and Margaret Deitrick. Her husband, George Tholen, died ten years ago.
Surviving are two daughters, Margaret and Mary, at home, and three sons, Henry, Cherokee, Okla., John of Pisgah and George of Jacksonville.
Mrs. Tholen had been a resident of Jacksonville for twenty-one years, moving there from Chapin community where many years of her life were spent. She was a member of Salem Lutheran church.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the residence on West Lafayette avenue in charge of Rev. J. G. Kupler. Interment was in the Diamond Grove Cemetery, Jacksonville.
Among those attending from Bluffs were Mrs. Minnie Tholen and daughter, Miss Freda, Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Weiss and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Weiss.

The funeral of the late George Tholen was held at the residence, 1430 West Lafayette avenue at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in charge of Rev. J. G. Kuppler, pastor of the Salem Lutheran church.
The services befitting the sad occasion were conducted in both the German and English language. The German musical selections were sung by members of the Lutheran church, the English selections being furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Williamson, Miss Clara Ranson and Charles A. Rowe.
The abundance of beautiful floral offerings were lovingly cared for by the four granddaughters, Flora and Bernice Stumborg, Mabel Tholen and Freida Tholen.
When the house ceremonies were concluded the remains were taken to Diamond Grove cemetery where they were placed in their last earthly home, the bearers being Martin Aring, Albert Unken, and Fred Yarding of Chapin, George Royce, Walter McCormick and Winfield Scott of Jacksonville.
There was a large assemblage of sorrowing relatives and friends in attendance. Those from out of town were: Richard Stumborg and children, Flora, Emory and Bernice of Baylis; Mrs. Minnie Tholen and daughter Freida, and Mr. and Mrs. Will Tholen of Bluffs; Thomas Achoff of Camp Point, John Koster, Mr. and Mrs. August Peeler and Mrs. Race of Beardstown; Mr. and Mrs. August Hansmeyer of Arenzville; also many relatives and friends from Chapin and Meredosia.
George Tholen Sr., was born Feb. 21, 1830 in Hanover, Germany. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran church of his native town. In the year 1851, at the age of 14 years, he came to America, settling in Morgan county, northwest of Chapin.
In the year 1858, he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Thole, who lives to mourn his loss. If God had spared his life till next February, both could have celebrated their sixtieth marriage anniversary. Their union was blessed with nine children, four of whom, namely, Ricke, John, William and Mrs. Anna Stromberg, have preceded the father into eternity. Besides his faithful wife he is survived by the following children: Henry Tholen of Cherokee, Okla.; Margarette, Mary, John, and George Tholen of Jacksonville, besides eleven grandchildren.
About ten months ago Mr. Tholen's health began to fail. His condition gradually grew worse and at times he suffered acute pain.
Last Monday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. he peacefully passed away, attaining the age of 81 years 9 months and 5 days.

Mrs. Hannah Harmina Tholen passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 1928 at 9:30 p.m. at her home northwest of Chapin. Her death was due to heart disease. She was the eldest daughter of Dietrich and Anna Dieckhoff-Ommen. She was born near Meredosia, March 24, 1856. She was married Jan. 4, 1877, to Henry F. Tholen. This union was blessed with three sons and one daughter, who survive. Tey are William of Winchester, Edward of Bluffs, George on the homestead and Lydia at home. She is also survived by three step-sons, John of Webster, N.Y., Fred of Barry and Herman of Meredosia; also 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mr. Tholen passed away Jan. 26, 1905. She also leaves to mourn her passing four brothers and five sisters; Herman Ommen, Bluffs; John Ommen, Diller, Neb.; Dick Ommen, Harbine, Neb.; Henry Ommen, Butler, Okla.; Mrs. Katherine Botterbusch, Bluffs; Mrs. Mary Willems, Diller, Neb.; Mrs. Emma Kalthoff, Alma, Mo.; Mrs. Sophia Rolfs, Diller, Neb.; Mrs. Tillie Leathers, Ponca City, Okla.
Mrs. Tholen was a life long member of the Lutheran church having been baptized in infancy and confirmed at an early age.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Lutheran church Monday October 1, at one p.m. in charge of Rev. J. H. Sieving.
Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Edwin Eckhoff, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Nienhiser and Evelyn Nienhiser. The hymns were "Asleep in Jesus" and "Jesus, Savior Pilot Me." The quartet was accompanied by Eda Eckhoff at the organ.
The pall bearers were John Hurrelbrink, Raymond Morris, Roy Botterbusch, Erich Nortrup, Lawrence Kistner and Carl Berghaus.
The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Lawrence Kistner, Laura Schumacher, Carrie Bolhs, Ada Schumacher, Mrs. Carl Berghaus and Marguerite Dickins.
Interment was made in the Tholen Cemetery.

Mr. Tholen followed the occupation of farming until two years ago when he retired. Previous to his retirement the family home was in the Pisgah community.
He was born on a farm north of Chapin March 22, 1872, a son of George and Anna Tholen. He was married oct. 14, 1895, to Miss Luella Bonds. To this union three children were born; James Tholen deceased; Roy Tholen, residing on rural route 6, and Mrs. Mabel German of this city. He leaves also three grandchildren, Roy, Jr., and Barbara Jean and John Joseph Tholen; two sisters, Misses Margaret and Mary Tholen, and one brother, George, all of this city. At the age of 15 Mr. Tholen was confirmed in the Neelyville Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the Williamson funeral home with interment in Chapin cemetery. The body will be returned to the residence at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon.

Mrs. Louella Tholen, widow of John F. Tholen, died suddenly early Thursday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clarence German, 614 South Main Street.
She was born southwest of Chapin on Jan. 3, 1880, daughter of James and Annie Stromborg Bonds. Her marriage with John F. Tholen was solemnized in October, 1896. His death occurred July 20, 1939. Mrs. Tholen also was preceded in death by one son, James.
Surviving are two children, Mrs. Clarence German and Toy Tholen, both of this city; four brothers, John and Ira Bonds of Chapin, Elmer Bonds, Murrayville, and Henry bonds, Racine, Wis., two sisters, Mrs. Della Anderson, Chapin and Mrs. hazel McGlasson, Winchester. There are three grandchildren, one great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Tholen who resided in jacksonville 32 years, was a member of Salem Lutheran Church. The remains will be removed from the Gillham Funeral Home to the residence, 614 South Main street, Friday at 2 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Salem Lutheran Church, with Rev. H. H. Koppelmann officiating. Burial will be made in Chapin cemetery.

Roy D. Tholen of 122 East Morton Avenue, a well known jacksonville resident, died at 6:15 a.m. Sunday at Our Saviour's hospital after several month's illness.
Mr. Tholen was born at Chapin in 1898. He attended Jacksonville High School and Illinois College, where he was one of the most valuable players in basketball and football. Many Jacksonville citizens recall his high school and college days, when he was familiarly known as "Squab" Tholen.
For 11 years the decedent was employed as an attendant at the Jacksonville State hospital. He was a veteran of World War I.
On Nov. 27, 1923, he was united in marriage with Loretta Shork of Beardstown, who survives, together with three children, Roy Tholen, Jr., of this city; Mrs. Barbara Jean Slaby, Pharr, Texas, and John Tholen of Jacksonville; a sister, Mrs. Clarence German of this city, and a grandson, Roy (Danny) Tholen III.
The remains are at the Reavy Funeral Home, where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Our Saviour, with Rev. Francis Cunningham officiating. Burial will be made in Calvary cemetery in Springfield.
