Carpenter's Mill
Springfield Journal Register, date of paper which originally published the following is unknown.
"OLD CARPENTER'S MILL IN FLOOD IN THE EIGHTIES--
It is always interesting to hark back to the old mills of Sangamon County which
were so intimately connected with the pioneer days hereabouts. Carpenter's Mill was probably the best
known of all. It stood on the south side of the Sangamon River north of town where the Route 66 highway
bridge crosses. . . . This picture, taken in the 1880's, is quite unusual in that it shows
the old mill with the iron bridge and the single track road to Springfield almost marooned by
heavy flood waters which spread the river over a wide expanse. . . . Originally Carpenter's Mill
was used as a combination grist and saw mill but in later years it was
devoted to general milling. It suspended operations about 1870, after which it gradually
disintegrated. . . . This was a favorite fishing and picnic spot for residents of
Springfield's North side.
