This short introduction concerning St. Paul's is taken from an article written by Patricia Newberry Nichols and contributed to Florence Hutchison for publication in 1988.

“The German families who came to Morgan County in the mid 1800's brought with them their traditions, their determination, and their faith in God. Their hard work and willingness to make sacrifices produced a fertile land from Jacksonville to Meredosia, from Bluffs to Concord. And their faith in God produced excellent houses of worship.

One such place of worship is St. Paul's Lutheran Church which is located one and one-half miles west of Chapin, Illinois and one and one-half miles north of Route 104 near Bethel, Illinois. The German families eager to establish a place of worship are still numbered in our citizenry of today – Aring, Bartelheim, Berghaus, Brockhaus, Bruening, Brunow, Deterding, Duvendack, Eckhoff, Gerboth, Hemme, Hemminghaus, Jording, Knueppel, Meier, Middendorf, Nergenah, Ommen, Perbix, Russwinkel, Sandman, Schultz, Schumacker, Tholen, Tiemann, Vannier, Vortman, and Wohlers. These families proceeded to build their house of worship early in the year of 1850, less than ten years after most of them arrived in this area. The church, St. Paul's Lutheran, was completed in the summer of 1850 and is an active church today.” Pat went on to recount the history of this “lovely little country church”. Much of the history of St. Paul's was made available through the efforts of Miss Ada Schumacher (25 Aug 1891 - 6 Feb 1988), at that time the oldest member of St. Paul's, daughter of Gottlieb & Caroline Brockhaus Schumacher and the grand-daughter of Herman Gerhardt Brockhaus, one of the church founders. She laboriously hand copied all of the vital records of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
