Mrs. Mariah A. Smith

Mariah A. Fanning Smith, daughter of Henry and Martha Fanning, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ralph DeLong, in Waverly, at 8:20 o'clock Sunday morning, January 2, aged 90 years.

On March 16, 1871, she was united in marriage with John Y. Smith, who preceded her in death twenty years ago. To this union were born eleven children, of whom eight survive: Martha Almeda Proffer, of Bloomfield, Mo.; Eli H. Smith, of Carlinville; John H. Smith, of Woodson; Mrs. Gracie Ellen Neece, of Joliet; James Shelby Smith and Mrs. Rebecca Adeline Rawlings, of Jacksonville; Mrs. Lola May DeLong, of Waverly; and Miss Mildred Susan Smith, of Rochester, N.Y. Two daughters, Mrs. Judia Evaline Hettick and Mrs. Nancy Isabelle Rawlings, and an infant son, Jasper E., preceded her in death.

She is also survived by 33 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Judia Barnett, of White Hall, and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was a member of the Hartland Baptist church.

She was a devoted wife and mother. Although she had been an invalid for several years, she had remained cheerful, and had borne her affliction without complaint. She will be greatly missed in her home, and in the home of her daughter, who has so tenderly watched over her during her last years.

Funeral services were held at the Neece Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Henry Spencer, of Murrayville.

Mrs. E. H. Sheppard and Mrs. Holland Elliott sang "Golden Bells" and "No Night There", the accompanist being Miss Mattie Deatherage.

The pall bearers were Lindell DeLong, Delbert DeLong, Wendell Rawlings, Delbert Neece, Claud and Clyde Smith, all grandsons of the deceased.

Those caring for the flowers were Mrs. Herman J. Brown, Mrs. V. C. Jones, Miss Evalyn Neece, Mrs. Fred DeLong, Mrs. Lowell DeLong, Mrs. Still, Mrs. Roy Shelton, Mrs. Lindell Delbert DeLong and Mrs. Guy Hicks.

Burial was in Youngblood Cemetery, Nortonville.
