Sylvia M. French, 83, of South Jacksonville died Saturday evening, March 28, 1998 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

She was born June 21, 1914 in Nortonville, the daughter of Olen and Alma Fanning McLamar. She married Merle C. French July 1, 1933 in Murrayville and he preceded her in death in 1960.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Jo Ann) Gibbs of Modesto and Mrs. C. A. (Dorothy) DeGroot of Jacksonville; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a great-great grandson; three sisters, Martha Upchurch and Betty Pruden, both of Jacksonville, and Mary Knapp of Meredosia; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Merle; and two brothers, Merrill and John McLamar.

Mrs. French was active many years in the management of the family farm and was employed for 10 years in the dietary department of the Jacksonville Developmental Center, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the Youngblood Baptist Church of Nortonville and the Jacksonville VFW Post 1379 Auxiliary, where she formerly served as an officer. She was a former member of the Moose Auxiliary, Scottville Eastern Star and the Jacksonville White Shrine.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Youngblood Cemetery in Nortonville with VFW Auxiliary services to be conducted. A visitation will be held from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Youngblood Baptist Church in Nortonville. Memorials are suggested to the Youngblood Cemetery or the Youngblood Baptist Church. The Gillham-Buchanan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
