Woodward Cemetery

Using the village of Concord as a starting point, the easiest way to find the remains of this cemetery is to drive south of the village a distance of 1.6 miles, where an electrical substation will be found. From the substation drive east a distance of 1.1 miles. Near the northeast corner of an intersection with a poor road one can see a single large gray granite tombstone marking the graves of John & Eunice Spaulding. This tombstone is atop an embankment and faces the poor road. No other tombstones are to be seen in the treeless cemetery. There are remnants of an iron fence which once enclosed an area of about 50 feet by 50 feet in distance. Odell Woodward of Chapin indicated that he thought several bodies had been exhumed from this cemetery and reinterred in Diamond Grove Cemetery at Jacksonville.

When we visited this "cemetery" on 17 March 2007, we found only the one large marker for the Spaulding burials standing. It is located at the very edge of a field which is under cultivation. The marker stands about 1 foot from the edge of the field and about the same distance from the deep ditch which runs between the field and the road. I'll go back sometime soon and retake the photograph - my camera mal-functioned and I didn't notice the problem until later. The following is a list of known burials in this cemetery.
