Joshua Hubbs, aged 86 years, died Tuesday morning, May 20, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Everett Burnett, near Waverly, where he has made his home for the past eight years. Death was due to the troubles incident to old age.

Joshua Hubbs, son of Willis and Elizabeth Hubbs was born in Orange County, Ind., February 24, 1833. He was one of a family of fourteen children. His paternal ancestors came from England and entered the land on which Charleston, South Carolina, is now built. His maternal ancestors came from Scotland and entered the land on which Baltimore was afterward built. Both families were harassed by the Indians and helped to fight the various wars for safety and afterward for freedom.

They converted the forests into homes and helped build roads, bridges, school houses, churches and all other public improvements.

One morning while attending to chores a great aunt was attached by the Indians and scalped and thrown in a brush pile. She crawled to the house and recovered and lived for many years. During the war of 1812 one of his aunts, learning her son was sick in New Orleans started alone on horse back from her home in Kentucky to bring him back. When she had ridden 150 miles she met friends bringing him back and she returned to her home.

John Hubbs, grandfather of the deceased, settled near Knoxville, Tenn., and engaged in farming. He was a slave owner but several years before the war of the Rebellion he gave these negroes their freedom.

The deceased was united in marriage to Miss Rachel L. Acre, December 12, 1851, and a home was established in Iowa. A year later they removed to California and remained for four years. On their return they settled on a farm near Prentice, Morgan County, Ill., and the deceased engaged in farming. He retired from business life in 1893 and made his home in Springfield until the death of his wife in 1910, since which time he has resided with his daughter, Mrs. Everett Burnett. Here he ha had most loving and devoted care thru his declining years.

Surviving are five daughters and three sons; Mrs. William Brown and Mrs. G. T. Wiswell, Jacksonville; Mrs. Everett Burnett, Waverly; Mrs. Charles Jasper, Auburn; Mrs. Chas. Ward, Pisgah; Martin L. Hubbs, San Francisco, Cal.; Newton Hubbs, Palmyra; Geo. F. Hubbs, Springfield. There are also twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Union Baptist Church near Pisgah yesterday morning, May 22, 11 o'clock, in charge of Rev. F. M. Crabtree.
