John W. Mayes, aged 86, of Virden, died at the home of his son, Thursday, in Virden, Thursday morning last week, after a few hours' illness.

Mr. Mayes, who was born October 6, 1859, near Waverly, spent most of his life on a farm east of Waverly. His wife, Elizabeth, preceded him in death 14 years ago.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lennie Mayes, of Lowder, and Mrs. Daisy Peterson, of Keokuk, Ia.; five sons, Fred, of Virginia, William E., of California, Thurston, of Virden, and Albert and Elmer, of Springfield; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Virden Saturday afternoon, and burial was in the Turner cemetery, near Waverly.
