Shepherd W. W.
OLD PISGAH CEMETERY OBITUARIES

SHEPHERD, W. W.
Jacksonville Daily Journal, March 12, 1892

AN OLD CITIZEN GONE.

At 6 p.m. Thursday W. W. Shepherd breathed his last at his home in the east part of the county. he was stricken with paralysis the evening before and never spoke afterward

Mr. Shepherd was born in Ohio in the region of Cincinnati in May, 1827, and when yet a youth moved to this state with his parents and settled in the part of the county in which he has since resided. In October, 1852, he was married to Miss Simpson by whom he was the father of five children, three sons and two daughters. The daughters and one son died in childhood leaving two sons, one of whom is traveling for a St. Louis house and has a responsible and profitable position. The other is at home and is a partner in the home place and the fine stock for which the Shepherd farm is so justly noted. The first son is now in Texas, but is expected home soon. Mr. Shepherd's wife died in 1879 and the following year he was married to Mrs. Witty, who survives him. He was a man of excellent character, a devout Christian and for many years an elder in the Pisgah Presbyterian church. He was a man of strict integrity and was trusted by all who knew him and their confidence was never misplaced. He was a useful man in society and a good neighbor to all who lived near him and his death will be a loss to the entire community in which he lived. His sister was Mrs. John Hill, who died a few years since.

In speaking of Mr. Shepherd recently a friend said of him that he had more accidents and sickness than ordinarily fell to the lot of a careful temperate man. When but 20 years old he cut his knee slightly with a corn knife and taking cold in the wound he was laid up for seven months, and after nearly dying, was left a cripple for life. Twice he was brought to death's door with pneumonia, and a few years ago a horse fell with him and badly broke the same leg so that amputation was seriously considered by the surgeon in charge. A little over a year ago he had a slight stroke of paralysis from which he rallied measurably well, only to be stricken down, this time fatally. Truly a good man has gone to his reward leaving his family the rich legacy of a good name.

The funeral occurs today (Saturday) at the family residence at half past one.
