Oakland Cemetery Index

NW 1/4 SE 1/4, Sec. 8, T. 16N, R. 9W

Thanks to Jeanie Lowe for the photos included here.

This cemetery was totally re-read during the 2nd week of June 2006. The cemetery is well maintaied, contains many nice trees and, with the exception of one section, does not have many stones which are down and/or broken. The section which does have a number of stones down, broken and buried is what I would call the large middle section. This section is very old, containing stones from the 1830s and 1840s. This particular section also has a great deal of empty space or stones which are very widely spaced which leads me to believe that there are a great many burials in this cemetery - probably most very old - which have either never been marked with stones or for which the stones have disappeared.

There are two lots in this cemetery which have very very old, unique and beautiful iron fences - both very different and unlike any I've seen in any other cemetery. Although Jeanie has them pictured above, the shade and shadows make it difficult to see how very ornate and lovely the fences are.
