Clifford L. Hess, 89, of South Jacksonville, died Wednesday afternoon, February 12, 1997 at the Regency Care Residence in Springfield, IL. He was born July 29, 1907, in Beardstown, the son of Louis C. and Clara E. Yeck Hess. He married M. Dorothy Horrer June 19, 1929 at Salem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Donald (wife Jackie) of Minneapolis, MN, and Larry (wife Judi) of Champaign; a daughter, Mrs. Dan (Jean) Schade of Belleville; six grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two brothers, Floyd W. and Paul E., both of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson; a brother, Howard J.; and a sisters, Elizabeth Myers. Mr. Hess was involved in education for 25 years, teaching in rural Morgan County and later served as principal of Chapin Grade School prior to its consolidation into Triopia School District. He then served as a tire salesman for Hess Tire Company for 28 years before retiring. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Lutheran Brotherhood, and a life member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. Funeral services will be 10:30 Saturday at the Gillham-Buchanan Funeral Home with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery south of Jacksonville. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday until time of services. Memorial gifts may be given to the Salem Lutheran Church or Visiting Nurses Association of Morgan and Scott Counties."

Dorothy H. Hess, 94, of South Jacksonville, died Tuesday afternoon, April 5, 2005 at the Regency Nursing Care Residence in Springfield. She was born June 12, 1910 in Morgan County (IL), the daughter of Chris and Martha Anton Horrer. She married Clifford L. Hess on June 19, 1929 at Salem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, and he preceded in death Feb. 12, 1997. She is survived by one daughter, Jean (husband Dan) Schade of Buffalo Grove; two sons, Larry (wife, Judi) of South Padre Island, TX, and Donald (wife Jacqueline) of Minneapolis; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one brother, Paul Horrer of Oceanside, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one grandson; two brothers, Herman and John Horrer; and two sisters, Alice Horrer and Pauline Martin. Mrs. Hess was employed several years as a buyer and sales clerk for Waddell's and Gillespie's department stores in Jacksonville. She later served 10 years as a secretary for Jonathan Turner Junior High School in Jacksonville. She was a life long member of Salem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville. She was also a former member of the Soroptimist Club and Morgan County Home Extension. Along with her husband, she was active in the Lutheran Brotherhood and volunteered at the Jacksonville Developmental Center. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Gillham-Buchanan Funeral HOme in Jackosnville, with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery south of Jacksonville.
