Daniel Holmes Cemetery
aka
Diamond Grove Baptist Cemetery
NW1/4 Section 2, Twp. 14N, Range 10W
Morgan County, Illinois

Directions: Take Woods Lane south off Rte. 104 just south of the Jacksonville intersection of Rte. 104 and Morton Avenue. The lane winds around and goes up over Interstate 72. The cemetery sits on the right (west) side of the road just before you reach the intersection of Woods Lane and Hembrough Rd. The distance from Rte. 104 to Holmes cemetery is approximately 2 miles.

The reading I used to create this transcription doesn't indicate when it was originally completed. It may well be a compilation of several readings. It states "this badly overgrown cemetery is situated about a mile north of Lake Jacksonville at an intersection of two country roads. In winter it is clearly visible from the roadway, but an August search for this site found it so overgrown with brush and weeds as to be passed by if one didn't know it was there. Several evergreen trees draw attention to this cemetery." I visited this cemetery in March 2002 and it appears that the cemetery has been cleaned and is being mowed during the summer months. In addition, there is a sign with the cemetery name hanging on the fence outside the cemetery and beside the road. This is a very old cemetery with most of the burials dating from the 1830s - 1850s. There are many burials where stones have been broken and have disappeared with nothing but the very bottom base still standing. In addition there are more than a half dozen graves which were marked with those old sand stone slabs - unfortunately the intervening years and weather have resulted in layers of the stone crumbling off so that it is impossible to determine whose grave is marked by these slabs. I also uncovered two markers which were down and covered over with grass and dirt - no doubt there are others I didn't find since I didn't probe the entire cemetery. Most of the stones were still legible which is remarkable given the length of time they have been standing.

If a name appears in red, click on the name to bring up a picture of that individual's tombstone.
