VETERAN RESIDENT OF MORGAN COUNTY DIES AT HOSPITAL
Antonio DeFrates, 81 Years Old, Ill but Two Weeks.

Antonio DeFrates, 81 years old, a resident of Morgan county since coming to this country from the Isle of Madeira when a young man of 28, passed away at Passavant hospital. He had been making his home with his son, Clifford DeFrates, four miles northwest of the city, but owing to illness of other members of the family had been brought to the local institution for treatment.

He had been ill but two weeks. His death was due to pneumonia which took advantage of his advanced age. Before that time Mr. DeFrates had been fairly active.

For many years he followed the occupation of farming, but with old age he retired from this work. During his long residence in the county the decedent acquired hosts of friends. He was a well known and well liked man, and was a member of the Northminster Presbyterian church of this city.

The decedent was born on the Isle of Madeira Oct. 8, 1838, a son of Manuel and Mary DeFrates. He came to the United States in early manhood and came direct to Morgan county. In 1866 he was united in marriage with Frances DeFrates, who died seven years ago.

Surviving are three sons, Henry, Frank and Clifford DeFrates; three brothers, Joseph of this city; James of Moline, and John of Los Angeles, Cal., and one sister, Mrs. Mary Souza, also of that city.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at Northminster church. Rev. W. E. Spoonts, the pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Ebenezer cemetery.
