Craig-Barrow Cemetery

Craig Cemetery
Barrow Cemetery

SW 1/4, Section 13, Township 14N, Range 10W
Morgan County, Illinois

A tall gray tombstone is the most prominent feature of this forgotten cemetery situated on a knoll among several large old trees near the southeast extremity of Lake Jacksonville. Oak Ridge South School was formerly a short distance south of the site. The cemetery is unfenced. Nearly all of the tombstones here are broken and all but the tall spire and 2 broken bases with the bottom part of stones were buried from 5 to 6 inches beneath the grass and soil. This Craig Cemetery should not be confused with the Craig Cemetery southeast of Lynnville.

To reach this cemetery, at Rees Station alongside Rte. 104, drive west on Rees Rd to Hoagland Rd. Turn right (north) on Hoagland Road and drive to Barrows Rd. Turn right (east) on Barrow road and drive for approximately 3/4 to 1 mile. The cemetery is situated about 1/4 to 1/2 mile north of the road and between the two houses which also sit on the north side of Barrows Rd. You can see the tall gray spire on the knoll which is surrounded on all sides by tall grass pasture. We visited this cemetery, dug up the stones we could find and photographed same on 25 April 2008.
