REDMOND, DENNIS J.

Jacksonville Daily Journal, Friday, 12 Dec 1884

Funeral of Dennis J. Redmond.

The funeral services over the remains of the late Dennis J. Redmond took place yesterday afternoon and were more than usually solemn and impressive. In spite of the storm of snow which prevailed an unusually large number of people were in attendance, proving the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The funeral was held under the direction of the Young Men's Catholic Benevolent Society, of which the deceased was the president. At about two o'clock the members of the society assembled at their hall on Court street and forming in line under the command of Marshal M. H. Carroll marched to the late residence of the deceased on Lafayette avenue. The members of the society were in full regalia and presented a good appearance. The remains were conveyed to the Church of our Savior, the following gentlemen acting as pall bearers: John Schmalz, Michael Meany, Eugene McCauliff, W. A. Carroll, Edward Keating and John Fearon. At the church the usual service was conducted by Rev. Father Hickey and it was followed by a brief history of the life and character of the deceased in which the reverend father paid a noble tribute to his many good qualities. The casket was then opened and an opportunity given the friends to take a last look at the features of the deceased. The society again took charge of the remains and the funeral procession was formed. The members of the society marched on foot as far as Westminster street, where carriages were waiting for them. The procession was an unusually long one, the line of carriages being almost interminable. On the arrival at the Catholic cemetery the society again formed in line and the remains were conveyed to the grave where the final service for the dead was performed and all that was mortal of Dennis Redmond was placed beneath the earth.

At a special meeting of the Young Men's Catholic Benevolent Society of Jacksonville, Ill., held at St. Patrick's Hall December 11, 1884, the following resolutions were unanimously adopted.
