Prominent local builder Claude Lemon dies at 75

Prominent local builder Claude R. Lemon, who died early Tuesday morning, Aug. 15, 1995, at his home, is remembered as a dedicated public servant during a brief term on the Jacksonville City Council.

"Claude was a good alderman," said former council member Joe Grojean. Both served on the council from 1958-62, he said.

"He did a lot of good work," Mr. Grojean said. "He was a Democrat and I was a Republican, but he certainly worked hard on the council. He spoke his mind."

Mr. Lemon was a member of the council's properties committee and was instrumental in developing the swimming area and boat dock at Lake Jacksonville, Mr. Grojean said. Mr. Lemon was also a member of the Jacksonville Zoning Board.

Mr. Lemon, 75, was born Jan. 9, 1920, in Scott County, a son of Harry and Alice Lemon. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Duncheon on June 25, 1949, in Jacksonville. She died Aug. 21, 1986.

He is survived by two sons, Robert A. (wife, Stacy) Lemon and Mark A. Lemon, both of Jacksonville; four daughters, Mrs. Charles E. (Susan) McNeely and Mrs. Joe (Laura) Beets, both of Jacksonville, Mrs. David R. (Geralyn) Merritt of Springfield and Claudia Lemon of Chatham; 11 grandchildren; one brother, Eugen Lemon of Roodhouse; one sister, Elva McMahan of Roodhouse; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Frieda Patterson.

Mr. Lemon was a member of the Church of Our Saviour and the Knights of Columbus. He was a veteran who served during World War II.

Mr. Lemon had been building homes in Jacksonville and the surrounding areas since 1946. His sons will continue the business.

Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of Our Saviour, with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Williamson Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Thursday with the family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Woodhaven Hospice or the Visiting Nurses Association.

Elizabeth A. Lemon

Elizabeth A. "Betty" Lemon, 63, of Jacksonville died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Medical Center. Mrs. Lemon was born Jan. 12, 1923, in Virginia, the daughter of Lewis and Anna S. Devlin Duncheon. She married Claude R. Lemon in 1949 in Jacksonville. She was a member of Church of Our Saviour, Catholic Daughters of America, and Altar and Rosary Society.

Surviving are her husband, Claude; four daughters, Mrs. Charles E. (Susan) McNeely and Mrs. Joe (Laura) Beets, both of Jacksonville, Mrs. David (Geralyn) Merritt of Springfield and Claudia Lemon at home; two sons, Robert and Mark Lemon, both of Jacksonville; six grandchildren; one niece and three aunts.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Church of Our Saviour. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Reavy Funeral Home, Jacksonville, is in charge of arrangements.

'Betty' Lemon, 63, dies on Thursday 8-23-86

Elizabeth A. "Betty" Lemon, 63, 1102 S. Main St., died 7: 45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

She was born Jan. 12, 1923, in Virginia, daughter of Lewis and Anna S. Devlin Duncheon. She married Claude R. Lemon June 25, 1949, in Jacksonville. He survives with two sons, Robert Lemon and Mark Lemon, both of Jacksonville; four daughters, Mrs. Charles E. (Susan) McNeely and Mrs. Joe (Laura) Beets, both of Jacksonville, Mrs. David (Geralyn) Merritt of Springfield and Claudia Lemon at home; and six grandchildren.

Also surviving is a sister, Margaret Hayes of Jacksonville; three aunts, Ann Lonergan Doolin and Mrs. Ralph (Dorothy) Eoff, both of Jacksonville, and Mary Wiley of Galesburg; and one niece.

Mrs. Lemon was a member of the Church of Our Saviour, Catholic Daughters of America and the Altar and Rosary Society.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of Our Saviour. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be form 2 to4 p.m. and 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Reavy Funeral Home with prayer services conducted at 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Morgan County Cancer Fund or the Church of Our Saviour.
