This cemetery was used for burials for many years before its legal deed was recorded
on the land records of Morgan County. Not until Nov. 6, 1893 did William Burrus and Nancy J.
Burrus, his wife, sell to (unnamed) trustees of Burrus Cemetery this small plot of ground high
atop a bluff overlooking the Illinois River Valley. The land was conveyed for a buring ground
only.
A visual description of the cemetery describes it as being about ? of a mile southeast of the
junction of Boulevard Road and the Meredosia-Arenzville blacktop road. The cemetery is
about 100 yeards south of the latter road. It is not possible to see the cemetery from the
road. At the very pinnacle of a steep bluff, the unkept cemetery has a good fence and gate. A tree has fallen
across some of the burials, knocking over and breaking several tombstones. No road or path leads to
Burrus Cemetery which is one of many burial sites scattered atop the bluffs overlooking the valley of
the Illinois River. Nearly all of them have something in common: they are difficult to find and hard to
reach but fine scenic views are to be seen from them. While spending several hours searching for
Burrus Cemetery, the compilers discovered that almost none of the surrounding population is aware that
the cemetery exists. The compilers are indebted to Richard Webster of Jacksonville who knew of the
cemetery's existence and to genial Mrs. Carl Tiemann who allowed trespass of her property for a visit to the cemetery.
