Rev. Henry L. Johnson was born in Montgomery county, Kentucky, July 6th, 1820, and died at his home near Murrayville, Ill., March 7th, 1894, in the 74th year of his age. His disease was pneumonia and his illness continued but two or three days. He was the son of Benjamin and Mary Johnson, and the oldest of seven boys, five of whom with the father were ministers in the Baptist church. The father, with his family, left Kentucky in 1829 and settled near Jacksonville, Ill. Henry was converted at the age of eighteen, and soon began to preach, although not ordained until March 1, 1850, when nearly 30 years of age. In 1842 he was married to Nancy Hayne, by whom he had seven children, five sons and two daughters. Three of the sons became ministers. He was married a second time to Mrs. Elizabeth Towson [Note: her name was Mrs. Elizabeth Lawson], who became the mother of three daughters. Six children are still living. Brother Johnson belonged to that class of pioneer preachers who cultivated a farm for a living, and prfeached the gospel to the early inhabitants of Illinois without money and without price. They were men not learned in theology, not skilled in rhetoric, not versed in philosophy, but who fearlessly and successfully preached the truth as they understood it. Brother Johnson's field of labor embraced principally a few countgies in Illinois, immediately around his own home in Morgan county. He was a plain, sincere, open hearted man, extensively known and very much beloved. During his minitry he baptized 1784 person, married more than 400 couples, and officiated at more than 1,000 funerals. His funeral was conducted by Rev. W. M. Rhoades, of Upper Alton, assisted by Rev. B. B. Hamilton, of Whitehall, both of whom were intimate friends of the deceased. A very large concourse of relatives and friends tearfully attested their appreciation of the life and services of Rev. Henry L. Johnson.
