A PIONEER GONE
John Hughes Dies at Murrayville in His Eighty-Seventh Year

At a late hour Friday night the aged Mr. John A. Hughes of Murrayville, passed away, his death being principally due to the vital powers and hastened by an accident which resulted in a broken leg some two years since.

Mr. Hughes lacked but little of being 90 years of age and has it not been for the accident mentioned he might have lived to be 100. He was born on April 7, 1803 in Fleming county, Kentucky. When but nine years of age he removed with his father's family to Brown county, Ohio. In 1824 he came to White county, Illinois. There he was married to his first wife, Miss Elizabeth Webb, who lived until 1860. In 1826, at the age of 23 he moved to Morgan county, settling about one mile north of the present city limits. There he resided some six years, but in 1832 he located in the Murrayville neighborhood, where he has since lived. Nine children were the result of his first union, five of these being boys and four girls. All of them have grown to maturity, and have become respected and influential citizens. They are Robert and Mrs. Harriet Murray of Kansas; Allen, Mrs. Sarah A. McDonald, William, Mrs. Emma Dikis, John, Mrs. Mary Gunn, and Oliver P., who all live in this section of the state.

Mr. Hughes was thrice married. He had always been engaged in farming. By industry and economy he had accumulated considerable property. He was liberal toward every worthy cause, and just and fair in all his dealings. He was universally respected as an upright, honest man, and has been for 60 years a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church. The funeral services will occur this afternoon at Murrayville and will be conducted by Rev. W. H. Musgrove. A large delegation from Jacksonville expects to be present.
