Elizabeth Surratt, 85, dies Tuesday morning

Elizabeth Lavinia Spears Surratt, 85, of Chapin died Tuesday morning, May 17, at Jacksonville Convalescent Center.

She was born June 13, 1902 in Ashland, a daughter of Freeman Sutton and Bertha Minnis Pieper Spears.

She married William Oliver Surratt on Aug. 31, 1927 in Jacksonville and he survives with four sons, Richard Dean, Theodore Albert and Herschel Leroy Surratt of Chapin and Sherwood Spears Surratt of Concord, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a sister Ruth Irvin of Ord., Neb. She was preceded in death by a son William O. Jr., and one grandson, Timothy Surratt.

She was a member of the Chapin Christian Church, Pastorial Helpers, Chapin American Legion Auxiliary and was correspondent for the Triopia Tribune until entering the nursing home Dec. 5, 1986.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Williamson Funeral Home with burial in Berea Cemetery east of Jacksonville. Visitation after 11 a.m. Wednesday, family to meet friends 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials suggested to the Chapin Christian Church or Pathway School.
