About 7 o'clock Monday evening George W. Hagerty died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Orear on West college avenue, after a prolonged illness, fraught with much pain and suffering which were endured with patience and fortitude. The end was not unexpected and in fact it had been looked for for some time by both the bedfast sufferer and the family, and he was well prepared to meet it.

He was born in Kentucky near Lexington, but when a small boy he left his native state and came with his uncle to Illinois, where they settled on a farm in the Antioch neighborhood, about eight miles east of Jacksonville. This continued to be the home of the deceased until about 16 years ago, when he removed to this city.

In 1842 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Cassel, who died about 18 years ago. he is the last one of his family and is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Harry Baumer, of Portland, Ore., Miss Kate Hagerty, of Jacksonville, and Mrs. Frank Orear, also of Jacksonville. He also leaves three grandchildren, Earl and Lucille Baumer, of Portland, Ore., and George J. Orear, of this city.

When a young man Mr. Hagerty became a member of the Antioch church and during all the many years of his life afterwards he was a faithful and consistent Christian and always displayed a keen interest in church duties or obligations. He was just exactly what he appeared to be and when he made a promise he never broke it. Nor did he seek notority or public praise, but on the contrary, he was content to live a quiet and serene life, with his family and nature as company.

He was a prominent farmer and stock raiser in the county for many years until about 12 years ago, when age and ill health forced him to retire from the field of business activity. He was a very conservative man in all things and in matters with which he was familiar his judgment was regarded as almost infallible and his advice often solicited by friends was generously given when it was for goodly purposes.
