SPRINGFIELD - Helen Marie Abel, 83, of Springfield, formerly of Athens, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 7, 1921, in Prentice, the daughter of John c and Ethel Mae Lockett Abel.

Miss Abel was a member of Athens New Life Baptist Church.

Survivors: daughter, Linda Johnston of Springfield; five grandchildren; brother, Walter "Buddy" Abel of Athens; two sisters, Florence Abel of Springfield and Dorothy Beaty of Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews..

AHRENKIEL, PEARL HOPKINS

SPRINGFIELD - Pearl Ahrenkiel, 98, of Springfield died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Oak Terrace Health Care Center.

She was born Nov. 17, 1905, in Pottersville, Mo., the daughter of James W. and Ida Johns Hopkins. She married Chris Ahrenkiel Jr. in 1953 in Springfield; he died in 1977.

Mrs. Ahrenkiel graduated from Wesley School of Nursing in Oklahoma City and did postgraduate work at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and Children's Hospital in Detroit. She graduated from Columbia University in New York City with a degree in public health nursing. She served as chief of the Illinois Division of Public Health Nursing from 1956-69.

She was elected to the Hall of Fame of the Senior Citizens of Sangamon County Inc. in 1985 and received the ICHHS Home Health Service award for being an organizer of Home Health Services of Illinois. She was elected to Kappa Charter of Kappa Delta Pi and was a member of the United Methodist Women and Zonta Club.

Survivors: a sister, Velma Kelley of Springfield; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; and a great-great-niece.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Kumler United Methodist Church, the Rev. William Burton officiating. Burial: Hall Cemetery, Athens.

BEHNKE, ELEANOR M. STEIN

ATHENS - Eleanor M. Behnke, 89, of Athens died Tuesday, Feb. 8 2005 at St. John's Hospital.

She was born April 6, 1915, in Peru, the daughter of John and Mae Guest Stein. She married Albert Behnke in 1935 in Melrose Park.

Mrs. Behnke, a homemaker, was a member of the Athens United Methodist Church and the Athens Women's Club. She was a former member of York Center Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary of Lombard and the Dorcass Guild of Trinity Lutheran Church of Villa Park.

Survivors: husband, Albert; two sons, Don (wife, Gayle) Behnke of Arcadia, Fla., and Lee (wife, Dawn) Behnke of Athens; daughter, Sandra Ann (husband, Merritt) Foulk of Athens; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a niece.

BENNETT, IRENE BALSTER

ATHENS - Irene Bennett, 95, of Athens died Friday, Nov. 25, 2005, at St. John's Hospital.

She was born Feb. 10, 1910, in Tice, the daughter of Thomas and Katherine Caldwell Balster. She married Thomas Bennett in 1928; he died in 1978. A daughter, Eileen McDonald, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Bennett graduated from Athens High School. She worked as a clerk typist for the state comptroller's office for 28 years and was assistant county clerk for Menard County for 16 years. She was a member of Athens Christian Church.

Survivors: daughter, Donna (husband, Bob) Sandidge of Athens; son, Merle (wife, Wanda) Bennett of Petersburg; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

ATHENS - Dorothy Marie Bounds, 80, of Athens died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Petersburg.

She was born Oct. 7, 1924, near Athens, the daughter of John W. and Hattie Bell Nash Wiker. She married Robert Bounds in 1940; he died in 2000. A son, Richard Gene, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Bounds retired a nurse's aide from St. Johns Hospital after many years. She was a member of New Life Baptist Church in Athens and Athens Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors: two sons, Russell (wife, Ethel) and Roger (wife, Nancy) Bounds, both of Petersburg; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

BROWN, GEORGE W.

ATHENS - George W. Brown, 87, of Athens, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Memorial Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 10, 1916, in Clyde, N.D., the son of George T. and Inez Shringley Brown. He married Florence H. Alvis in1941 in Louisiana, Mo.; she died in 1993. A daughter, Barbara Jean Brewer, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Brown graduated from Downs High School in 1934 and from Illinois State University in 1938. He was a teacher in Modesto and Illiopolis and worked in banking from 1952-88, retiring as director and president of Athens State Bank.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as an ensign in the Southwest Pacific for more than three years. He was a member of AF&AM Blue Lodge, Illinois Bankers Association and American Bankers Association and was past president and a member since 1954 of the Athens Rotary Club. He was past president of the Sangamon Menard Bankers Federation and of Group 8 of the Illinois Bankers Association. He was a past commander of J.C. Wade Post 129 of the American Legion, the original director of the Shambolee Golf Course, past chairman of the official board of Athens United Methodist Church and was treasurer of the Athens School District for 27 years. He had served on the Athens Community Park Board since 1975.

Survivors: a sister, Elinor Lindsey of El Cajon, Calif.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

SPRINGFIELD - Lorraine Brown, 92, of Springfield died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Heritage Manor.

She was born July 16, 1909, in New Windsor, the daughter of Charles and Georgia Garret Isaacson. She married Glen Brown in 1938 in New Windsor.

Mrs. Brown earned a mathematics degree from Monmouth College in 1930. She was a member of Athens United Methodist Church, Just-A-Mere Club, DAR, American Association of University Women and Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors: husband, Glenn; two daughters, Karen (husband, Dr. Ben) Baker of Fort Smith, Ark., and Beverly (husband, John) Warner of Reeding, Conn.; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

BROWN, PAUL R.

Menard County Review

ATHENS - Paul R. Brown, 90, of rural Springfield died Saturday, December 27, 2003, at his home.

He was born March 18, 1913, in Athens, the son of Albert C. and Marie C. Ahrenkiel Brown. He married Florence Conboy in 1934 in Springfield. Two infant children, Bonnie Jean and Paul Dean preceded him in death.

Mr. Brown was an area farmer for several years. He worked for Allis Chalmers and F.S., retiring in 1978 after 17 ears. He was a member of VanMeter Masonic Lodge 762 for 50 years, Sherman United Methodist Church and Sangamon County Farm Bureau.

Surviving are his wife, Florence; two sons Glenn D. and Harold D. (wife, Carol) Brown, both of Rural Springfield; two grandsons; four brothers, Glenn Brown of Sherman, Chandler (wife, Dorothy) Brown of Springfield, and Loren and Kenneth (wife, LaVerne) Brown, both of Cantrall; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 30 at Mott and Henning Funeral Home, Athens. Burial was in Hall Cemetery, Athens.

She was born Nov. 4, 1923, in Athens, the daughter of Arthur and Katie Seipel Engel. She married Thomas L. Doss in 1951; he died in 2000.

Mrs. Doss retired from Franklin Life Insurance Co. after may years.

ATHENS - Charles Eden, 86, of Athens died Monday, July 18, 2005, at St. John's Hospital.

He was born April 11, 1919, in Athens, the son of Albert and Edith Hayden Eden. He married Dolores "Toots" in 1949; she died in 1992.

Mr. Eden retired after several years as a self-employed mechanic in 1986. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Athens VFW Post 5302.

Survivors: daughter, Jean (husband, Mike) Neale of Athens; son, Charles R. "Chuck" Eden of Athens; two grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; three brothers, Robert Eden of Athens, John Eden of Petersburg and Floyd Eden of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born Aug. 23, 1907, in Athens, the daughter of Robert and Julia Knott Knox. She married Zoel England in 1928; he died in 1972. A daughter, Barbara Baker, and a son, Donald England, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. England retired as a secretary from the International Shoe co.

Survivors: six grandchildren, Steven Jones of Pawnee, Tanner England of Collinsville, Elaine Robinson and Jennifer Basham, both of Jacksonville and Mark Jones and Gina Taylor, both of Loami; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three nephews and a niece.

Mrs. Ferguson was a beautician for many years. She was a member of Athens Christian Church and Athens VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She was born March 8, 1923, in Athens, the daughter of Alfred and Anna Rogers Adams. She married Howard Ferricks in 1940; he died in 1982.

Mrs. Ferricks, a homemaker for most of her life, was a member of Athens Christian Church and the Daily Bread.

ATHENS - Agnes Grant-Byram, 87, of Athens died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Lewis Memorial Christian Village.

She was born March 11, 1914, in Kilbourne, the daughter of Ira and Pearl Kinner Showalter. She married Lawrence Grant in 1935; he preceded her in death in 1977. She later married Glen T. Byram in 1979.

Mrs. Grant-Byram worked for the state Department of Public Health from 1955-1979, retiring from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. She was a member of the West Side Christian Church and the U & I Sunday school class there. She was a charter member of the Chat-Sew Club in Athens and a past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a music director at Athens Christian Church for 35 years.

Survivors: husband, Glen T.; two daughters, Leann (husband, Robert) Garmers of Athens and Nancy (husband, Ken) Thompson of Jacksonville, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Barbara Milman (husband, Dennis Camp) of Springfield; a stepson, Don (wife, Jane) Byram of Chatham; nine grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Thelma Shawgo of Greenview, Mary Rabish of Indianapolis and Ruth Summey of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews.

HARTLEY, VIOLA SHELTON

HUTSONVILLE - Viola Hartley, 83, of Hutsonville died Monday, July 1, 2002 at Burnside Nursing Home in Marshall.

She was born Oct. 17, 1918, in Athens, the daughter of Pearn and Ida Shelton. Two husbands, Michael Juenger and Herrick Wright and a son, Herschel Wright preceded her in death. She married Richard Hartley in 1995.

Survivors: husband, Richard; a daughter, Janet Hackman of Athens; three sons, Michael Juenger of Mesquite, Nev., Kirk Wright and Randall Wright, both of Paris; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

Services were held at Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home in Paris on Wednesday. Interment will be at a later date in Athens.


HENNING, MARJORIE H. STABLER

ATHENS - Marjorie H. Henning, 88, of Athens died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at Villa Health Care East in Sherman.

She was born Jan. 20, 1917, in Camp Point, the daughter of Everett and Bessie Booth Stabler. She married William Emory Henning in 1941 in Evanston; he died in 1997. A son, Robert Henning also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Hening graduated from Camp Point Maywood High School in 1935 and attended the Universit of Illinois. She worked at Pittsburgh Pint Glass Co. and Marshall Field's, both in Chicago. She assisted her husband at Mott and Henning Funeral Home in Athens.

She was a member of Athens United Methodist Church; Martha Class of the church; Athens Women's Club, serving as secretary for many years; Athens Pinochle Club for more than 50 years and National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution of Menard County. She was past president of Athens United Methodist Women for many years.

Survivors: two daughters, Janet (husband, Larry) Brown of Hermosa Beach, Calif., and Alic (husband, Don) Washington of Athens; son, Dick (wife, Karla) Henning of Athens; seven grandchildren; brother, James (wife, Ruth) Stabler of Racine, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born Feb. 26, 1929, in Springfield, the daughter of Edward and Mary Bland Bennett. She married Thurman Ingram in 1950 in Athens. A son, Toby, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Ingram graduated from Lanphier High School. She was a dental assistant for Dr. Jerry Millhon. She was a tp-year member of Athens Christian Church. She was a former member of Beta Sigma Phi and Athens Women's Club.

Mrs. Kern graduated from Athens High School. She was a member of Athens Immanuel Lutheran Church.

She was born Nov. 19, 1940, in Ashland, the daughter of Lee and Irene Jones Irvin. She married Bernard J. Jankauski in 1958 in Athens.

Mrs. Jankauski was supervisor of medical transcription at SIU School of Medicine and a medical transcriptionist for the Springfield Clinic. She was a partner at Triple "R" Caf� in Athens and a member of the Athens Women's Club.

ATHENS - Sharon Kay Jarrard, 62, of Athens died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at her home.

She was born April 1, 1941, in Springfield, the daughter of Paul and Mary Vidmar Delattre. She married Jarrell Jarrard in 1963 in Springfield.

Mrs. Jarrard graduated from Feitshans High School in 1959. She worked at Thrifty Drug Store, Ozark Airlines and Illinois Bell Telephone Co. She retired as a licensed practical nurse from PRN Healthcare. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and a HEART volunteer at Cantrall Elementary School.

Survivors: husband, Darrell; two sons, Jim (wife, Camile) and Jeff (wife, Elaine) Jarrard, both of Athens; five grandchildren; father, Paul Delatttre of Buffalo; a sister, Linda Delattre of Springfield; a brother, Arnold Delattre of Springfield; a niece; and a nephew.

PETERSBURG - Melford "Sony" McCoy, 72, of Petersburg died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at his home.

He was born Jan 2, 1930, near Bath, the son of Glenn and Zelda Hess McCoy. He married Phyllis Jenkins in 1954 in Athens.

Mr. McCoy was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He worked for Ideal Industries, Caterpillar and Stevens Implement; was a school bus driver for Porta High School; and was a farmer.

Survivors: wife, Phyllis Ann; a son, Michael (wife, Toddene) McCoy of New Holland; three daughters, Vicki (husband, Brooks) Ealy of Grand Junction, Colo., Doris Woodrum and Laci McCoy, both of Athens; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandson; three brothers, Buford "Pooge" (wife, Barbara) McCoy of Titusville, Fla., Charles (wife, Eldene) McCoy of Petersburg and Terry (wife, Janet) McCoy of Athens; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was born June 9, 1917, near Athens, the daughter of Charles and Edna Hopwood Hart. She married Cleo Miller in 1941 in Athens; he died in 1989.

Mrs. Miller was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Athens and the Ladies Aide.

Survivors: son, Karl Dean (wife, Jean) Miller of Athens; daughter Judy (husband, Lee) Cash of Farmer City; three great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Hart of Columbus, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

ATHENS - Marguerite Mitts, 80, of Athens died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Petersburg.

She was born Sept. 26, 1923, in Springfield, the daughter of Henry and Sarah Frances Wineland Basso. She married Harold "Skully" Mitts; he died in 1976.

Mrs. Mitts worked for the state of Illinois as an accountant. She was a member of Athens Christian Church and VFW Post 7 Women's Auxiliary.

Survivors: a son, Pat (wife, Dana) Mitts of St. Charles, Mo.; two daughters, Brenda (husband, Rick) Van Meter of Cantrall and Linda (husband, Gary) Richardson of Athens; a brother, Bill (wife, Pat) Basso of Spaulding; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services: 11 a.m., Monday, Mott and Henning Funeral Home in Athens, the Rev. Ken Gennicks officiating. Burial: Joel Hall Cemetery in Athens.


NANCE, ROY E.

ATHENS - Roy E. Nance, 87, of Athens died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center.

He was born Oct 6, 1918, in DuQuoin, the son of Solomon and Emma Hutchinson Nance. He married Doris Holler in 1940 in St. Louis. A daughter, Sandra Lee, preceded him in death.

Mr. Nance was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1945 to 1947. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps and later was a coal miner and welder. He was a maintenance man for Athens High School and Sangamon State University, retiring in 1984 after many years. He was a member of Athens American Legion.

Survivors: wife, Doris; daughter, Barb Wolfe of Petersburg; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wilma (husband, Chester) Powell of Athens and Roselyn Reynolds of Sherman; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

PORT, DR. ALAN J.

State Journal Register, Springfield, Illinois, Monday, May 27, 2002.

SPRINGFIELD - Dr. Alan J. Port, 73, of Athens died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center.

He was born March 31, 1929, in Syracuse, N.Y., the son of Ephraim and Juliet Burman Port. He married Regina Plopper in 1954 in Springfield.

Dr. Port graduated from Nottingham High School in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1947. He received a liberal arts degree from Syracuse University in 1951 and a doctorate of veterinary medicine form Cornell University in 1954. He was a veterinarian for 45 years, including 40 years in Athens.

He was an Eagle Scout and an officer in the U.S. Army from 1955-57. He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and was active in political and environmental organizations, including the Green Party and Heartland Peace Center.

Survivors: wife, Regina; a son, David Port of Athens; two daughters, Debra Bennett of Greenview and Nancy Wires of Virginia; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother Dr. Lawrence (wife, Dilys) Port of Syracuse, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

PORTER, ELIJAH G.

ATHENS - Elijah G. Porter, infant son of Loren and April Fitschen Porter of Athens, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at St. John's Hospital.

In addition to parents, surviving are: brother, Bailey W. Porter, at home; grandparents, Larry and Sherry Fitschen of Cantrall and Larry and Lorena Porter of Springfield; great-grandparents, Merritt and Esther Fitschen of Cantrall; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was born Oct. 27, 1945, in Springfield, the son of Jerry and Lourine Sanderfield.

Mr. Sanderfield graduated from Athens High School. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of New Life Baptist Church in Athens.

Survivors: a son, Troy (wife, Jenny) Sanderfield of Lincoln; a brother, Harold (wife, Charlotte) Sanderfield of Palmyra; five sisters, Dorothy (husband, Art) Wiseman and Nancy (husband, Glen) Bell, both of Athens, Linda (husband, Bob) Finney and Betty (husband, Bart) Rotherham, both of Springfield, and Lourine (husband, Ronald) Grant of Buffalo Junction, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born Dec. 31, 1915, in Athens, the daughter of Thoas and Anna Bruseke Tomlin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Sanderfield, in 1986, and a daughter, Mary Ann Wilcoxon.

Mrs. Sanderfield was a member of New Life Baptist Church in Athens.

Survivors: two sons, Harold (wife, Charlotte) Sanderfield of Palmyra and Jerry Sanderfield Jr. of Athens; five daughters, Lourine (husband, Ronald) Grant of Buffalo Junction, Va., Dorothy (husband, Art) Wiseman and Nancy (husband, Glen) Bell, both of Athens, Linda (husband, Bob) Finney and Betty (husband, Bart) Rotherham, both of Springfield; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was born Sept. 13, 1942, in Chicago, the daughter of Vernon and Lenora Gibson Templeton. She married Fred Tomlin in 1960 in Petersburg; he died in 2001.

Survivors: two sons, Michael and Allen (wife, Cyndi) Tomlin, both of Springfield; a daughter, Lore Schone of Petersburg; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Bob Cady of Springfield and Tommy McKowen of Jamestown, Ohio; a sister, Pennie Robinson of Sherman; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born Nov. 10, 1916, in Athens, the daughter of Arthur L. and Hazel Perkins Hughes. She married Hardy M. Vandagrift Jr. in 1937 in Athens; he died in 1999.

Mrs. Vandagrift was a member of Athens United Methodist Church and the Athens United Methodist Women and Chatsew Club.

Survivors: two daughters, Doris (husband, John) Melvin of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Harriett (husband, William) Carter of Petersburg; four grandchildren; three step grandchildren; a great-grandchild; six step-great-grandchildren; four nieces; and a nephew.

He was born May 3, 1935, in Springfield, the son of Harold and Dorothy Ruggles. His wife, Jolyne, died in 1970.

Mr. Wiker was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors: two sons, Harold (wife, Melissa) Wiker Jr. and George Wiker, both of Springfield; daughter, Linda (husband, Cliff) Foley of Springfield; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Larry Wiker of Lakeland, Fla.; sister, Joann Stickel of Springfield; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

WOOD, MARIETTA HOWARD

DAWSON - Marietta Wood, 72, of Dawson, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at St. John's Hospital.

She was born Oct. 22, 1929, in Athens, the daughter of Ralph "Chuffy" and Edna Sawyer Howard. She married Mark E. Wood in 1952; he preceded her in death in 1998.

Mrs. Wood retired in 1987 from the state Department of Public Aid after 35 years. She was a member of Rochester Christian Church, Hilltoppers and Friendship Circle Class.

Survivors: two daughters, Barbara (husband, Sal) Bosco of Hartford, Con., and Carolyn Gilliland of Springfield; a son, Mark (wife, Colene) Wood Jr. of Dawson; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Howard of Cedar Crest, N.M.; two sisters, Dorothy Green of Springfield and Sue Tapscott of Pleasant Plains; and several nieces and nephews.
