CANTRALL, ALFRED NEWTON

A. N. CANTRALL DIES

Alfred Newton Cantrall died at the Springfield hospital, Friday evening, August 1, 1924, at the age of 69 years, 4 months, and 13 days.

He was injured in a fall from a load of hay on July 3 in which he suffered a broken hip. He was rushed to the hospital after the accident and, for a time, it was thought he would recover but other complications resulted and he passed away during the early hours of last Friday evening, death being caused by his injuries and apoplexy.

Deceased was a son of Levi and Elizabeth Cantrall and was born near Four Corners, March 18, 1855. His father died when he was eight years old. The early part of his life was spent on the farm, known as the Levi Wilcoxson farm, where, with his mother, they engaged in farming.

Later the family moved to Illiopolis where they remained for a number of years. In February, 1880, they moved to Guthrie, Ford County. While living there, he united in marriage to Alice Mathews of Illiopolis. To this union seven children were born.

In 1883 he, with his family, moved to Athens, where he was engaged in the hardware business for a number of years. He resided on North Main Street until the death of his wife, September 13, 1916. After that time he resided with his son, Lloyd, until the latter moved to Michigan a year ago. Since that time he made his home with his son, Lee.

Mr. Cantrall was a man of very retiring manner and was held in highest regard and esteem by everyone. He had a very large number of loyal friends in this vicinity.

He is survived by seven children, five sons: Lloyd of Kalamazoo, Mich.; Weller of Denver, Colorado; Ross and Myron of Springfield; and Lee of this city; two daughters, Mrs. C. E. Canterbury of Cantrall, and Mrs. A. F. Dawson of Macomb; one sister, Mrs. Mary Warren of Illiopolis; eleven grandchildren; and a very large number of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Athens Christian Church, Sunday afternoon, August 3, at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. F. M. Morgan officiating. Interment was made in the Hall cemetery.

THOMAS L. CANTRALL, 72, DIED SUDDENLY SUNDAY AT ST. JOHN'S HOSPITAL

Thomas L. (Roy) Cantrall, 72, dean of Athens businessmen, passed away about 8:40 a.m. Sunday morning at St. John's Hospital, Springfield, where he had entered about midnight.

While he was known to be in frail health, his death came unexpectedly and was a decided shock to all.

He had operated a drug store here for about 50 years and was prominent in community and lodge activities. He had received his 50 year Masonic emblem last fall and was a charter member of Athens Rotary Club, a board member of Athens State Bank, and had served as a board member of Athens high school in years past, plus many other activities.

Mr. Cantrall was born April 5, 1885, at Illiopolis, a son of Thomas D. and Mary Enlow Cantrall.

Surviving him are his wife, Nina; one daughter, Mrs. Harriet Shurrager, Chicago; one granddaughter, Margaret Lynn Shurrager, Athens; and a sister, Mrs. Lynn Primm.

Services were held form the Mott and Son Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. W. E. Butler and Rev. J. W. Armstrong officiating. Athens businessmen closed their business places during the services.

THOMAS EDWARD CANTRALL ANSWERS LAST ROLL CALL

Thomas Edward Cantrall, son of Young M. and Mary Ellen Cantrall, was born on a farm near Fancy Prairie, March 12, 1862. He passed away at the Springfield hospital, November 18, 1938, aged 76 years, 8 months, and 6 days.

He was married to Grace M. Whitney May 8, 1883. To this union were born seven children, one of whom died in infancy.

Those who survive are: Stella M. Alkire, Sweetwater; Young M., Springfield; Allen W. of Athens; Paul and Roland of Peoria; and Bion of Chicago; fifteen grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

At the age of 18, he united with the Christian church at Athens, and wherever after he resided was interested in the church�s duties, serving as teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, elder, and deacon.

He was a teacher in the Menard County schools for about twenty years. He gave up teaching to take up his duties as County Superintendent of Schools, after which he was in the insurance business for several years. In later years he and Mrs. Cantrall had lived with their daughter near Sweetwater.

He was always interested in civic activities; was a great basketball fan, toastmaster, and was the first editor of the Athens Free Press.

Funeral services were held at the Athens Christian Church Sunday afternoon, November 20, at 2 o�clock, Rev. Donald J. Finley officiating. Interment was made in Hall cemetery.

The pallbearers were Thomas L. Cantrall, Arthur Cantrall, Henry Cantrall, Luther Cantrall, and George and C. Jay Whitney. Misses Beulah Ingram and Mary Clemons rendered the vocal selections, accompanied by Mrs. Sam Cantrall.

A Respected Citizen Passed Away After Seven Years Illness

Mrs. Mary T. Cantrall, daughter of Thomas and Margaret Enlow, was born at Dawson, Illinois, November 1, 1863, and died at the St. John�s Hospital, Springfield, at 5:00 o�clock Sunday morning, February 25, at the age of 70 years, 3 months, and 24 days.

Mrs. Cantrall received her early education in the schools of Illiopolis, Sangamon County, Illinois, and later attended State Normal College at Emporia, Kansas.

She became a member of the Christian Church in her early life and, at the time of her death, she had been a member of the church for the past fifty years.

She was united in marriage to Thomas D. Cantrall, November 30, 1884. To this union three children were born; two sons and one daughter. One son, Charles Raymond, died at the age of six months.

Mrs. Cantrall, who had been in very poor health for the past seven years, was taken suddenly worse lat week and removed to the hospital where her condition continued to grow worse until the end came in the early hours of Sunday morning.

For several years, she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Elmer Primm, of Middletown. Until ill health forced her to discontinue her activities, Mrs. Cantrall was very active in the clubs and church societies of this city.

She leaves to survive her, her son, Thomas Leroy of Athens; her daughter, Mrs. Lynn Primm of Middletown; and two granddaughters, Harriett Cantrall of Cantrall and Betty Jean Primm of Middletown.

Funeral services were held from the local Christian church at 2:00 o�clock Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Lester Gerber of Lynnville officiating. Interment was made in Hall cemetery.
