January Meeting

On January 13, 2022, Dr. Kelly Oberneufemann presented a program titled Eliza Lucas Pinckney: 20th Century Woman in the 18th Century.

Dr. Obernuefemann is a Professor of History and the Coordinator of History, Political Science, and Geography at Lewis and Clark Community College. Her areas of expertise are American Social History, American Southern History, and the American Civil War.

Eliza Lucas Pinckney changed agriculture in colonial South Carolina, where she developed indigo as one of its most important cash crops. Its cultivation and processing as dye produced one-third the total value of the colony’s exports before the Revolutionary War. Manager of three plantations, Mrs. Pinckney had a major influence on the colonial economy.

Although the audience was very small, this presentation was very well received and provoked questions and comments.
