Do you wish for there to be more information about history or genealogy in Kankakee county available on the internet? You can make it happen.

If you already have a site of Kankakee county historical or genealogical interest, please send me the URL so I can link to it.

Basically, there are four different types of things you can do.

  1. Volunteer to answer lookups and queries.
  2. Write or transcribe information so it can be converted to web pages.
  3. Make web pages.
  4. Support Rootsweb.

To put information on the web, you do not have to know anything about web pages. If you can make web pages, that's great, but the important thing is to get the information off of the paper and into the computer. I can help you get the information onto the web. If you are doing anything of considerable size, please let me know so we can coordinate format ect.

The big limit is COPYRIGHT LAWS. Please be sure not to do anything anything illegal - that would be a very bad thing. Be sure to know this information before answering lookups or queries or before transcribing information. If something is over 75 years old, it is no longer copyrighted. Period. Things get slightly more complicated in some cases. For example, it is ok to get the microfilm for a census and make a webpage from that information. It is illegal to acquire a census book compiled by someone else from that microfilm and transcribe it into a web page without permission. It is ok to walk a cemetery and make a web page from the information you have found. It is not okay to make the web page from someone else's cemetery book without permission. It is okay to copy a recent reprint of a book over 75 years old. It is not okay to copy new material, such as a new forward or index, without permission. If you get permission, please get it in writing.

It is also a good idea to be considerate of others and not post information about living persons.

Queries

It can be very rewarding answering queries for people - helping them find out information about their ancestors. Most of the queries are submitted through the form and are placed immediately on the Current Queries page. Some guests cannot use the form or prefer to use e-mail and their queries will appear on the Queries page when they and the form submited queries are indexed and updated (about every week or two.) Before spending much time on a query, you will probably want to e-mail the query submitter to find out if someone has already found the requested information. Please make arrangements with the query submitter about money before you spend anything (for copies, postage, records, ect.) if you expect to be reimbursed.

Lookups

If you have access to a resource and are willing to answer lookups, please send me an e-mail with the name of the resource and your e-mail address. Copyright laws apply to lookups so please read them. If your resource is copyrighted, you must get written permission to do lookups for the resource.

Family History

Post your surname or post much more information to the Family Surnames page. If you are researching a family in Kankakee county, you can post information here to share. It can be anything from a surname e-mail link to pages of information about your family - obituaries, biographies, family ledgends, a photo or two, family trees. Have you information up somewhere like at FTM or on your very own web page? It can easily be linked. As you can see, there are many wonderful pages already online. Transcribe an old newspaper article.
