You may find information on your ancestors in neighboring counties. Kankakee county was not formed until 1853. Before that, the land north of the river belonged to Will county and the land south of the river, except Essex and Norton townships, belonged to Iroquois county. The land in Essex and Norton townships was admitted to Kankakee county from Vermilion county in 1855.

QUERY: My mystery is the Christoph Tetreau family in Bourbonnais. The 1850 and 1860 US Census shows this family in Bourbonnais. I believe Christophe emmigrated from Canada with his wife Genevieve Benjamin. I can find no death for Genevieve, divorce, or an additonal marriage for Christophe. The 1850 census lists Sophia as what appears to be his wife. The 1860 census has Jane as what appears to be the wife. If anyone can help resolve this mystery, I would be greatful.

QUERY: I'm trying to find leads on the Birthplace of Edward/Edmond Brosseau, born in Canada in 1833, died Concordia, KS 1902, or of his wife Mary born in Canada 1835, died Concordia, KS 1907.  They had 10 children, the oldest, Noel (spelled Newel, Neville etc) was born in Bourbonnais in 1858.  I've found no leads on Mary's surname and can't link Edmond to any of the other male Brosseau's who lived in Kankakee at the same time (traced a couple into Canada).  My guess is that they came from either Longueuil or Beauce, Quebec, based on the hometown's of their in law's, and of their neighbors.

QUERY: Looking for information on my Turrell/Terrell ancestors who settled in Kankakee Cty in the area of Momence. I am particulary interested in finding information about my ggrandmother b. c.1861 to Luther Turrell. I believe she is listed as Ellen in the 1870 Federal Census. mary helen and her brother George H. came to NH to live with their uncle back on the family farm in Dunstable, MA/NH sometime before 1877, most likely after their father died. From my research I believe that Mary Helen had a brother Franklin who remained in the area, married and settled in Momence. There is a stone in the Shrontz Cemetery. I am particularly interested in finding who Mary Helen's mother was if possible and when Luther died, but looking for someone willing to do some research at Kankakee Library or has a membership with daily Journal and willing to look up some obituaries. Thanks.

QUERY: I am currently doing family history research on my grandfather, George Martell, born in Kankakee, Il in 1873 and died 1932 in Kankakee. Parents were Peter (1833) and Rosalie(1836) both born in Quebec. What is a mystery to me is that the family immigrated in 1864 and appear in the 1870 and 1880 US census as a unit. However George is not on those census records until 1900 at age 25 listed as son of above parents and living on Station street. Where was he from 1873 to 1900? Any suggestions appreciated. (1890 census records were destroyed by fire)
