Asberry Newby

Asberry NEWBY, a Jefferson County Pioneer, Passed Away Friday
Morning Asberry Newby died at 1 o'clock a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at
his home, five miles southwest of Mt. Vernnon, in McClellan township,
at the age of 68 years, his death being caused by congestion of the liver,
from which ailment he had been indisposed for more than a year. His death
has been expected for some time and was not a great surprise. Death came
without pain, and he bade his family goodby assuring them that he was ready
to go and prepared to meet his Maker.

Mr. Newby has always lived in this county and there was no man with a more
extensive acquaintance and persons who knew him held him in high esteem.
His early education was obtained in the public shcools and he graduated from
the Mt. Vernon school. After finishing his school work, he took up civil engineering
and surveyed the first railroad ever run through the county, known as the St. Louis
& Southeastern, which late became the L & N. While he never joined any church
his support to religious organizations was always liberal.

He resided in Dodds township until 1887 and was twice elected supervisor and three
times assessor in that township. Mr. Newby was married to Miss
Luphemia Adams, June 1, 1862, and to them were born six children.
Wm. F., Oliver M., Ambrose, and Effie J. Newby survive him and all
reside in the county. His wife died in March, 1879.

The funeral will be held at the old home Saturday morning at 10 o'clock,
conducted by Rev. E. B. Johnson The interment will be at Old Union.
